Chulla 4,946
How many of you remember when these were a common sight flitting around Nottingham from the two railway stations?
plantfit 7,597
A lot of brewery's used them as well, very versatile vehicle and the forunner of todays artics Rog I often wondered why it was named after a dung beetle
Commo 1,292
Me an`all Chulla, always thought that they were an "old fashioned" vehicle even then.
Chulla 4,946
Notice the 20 mph speed restriction plate on the rear of the vehicles. Even in those days this seemed a ridiculously low speed.
catfan 14,793
They were used a lot by British Rail to deliver goods round the town, Not a normal artic fifth wheel coupling either, much simpler. 20mph apeed limit around this part of Bulwell & no one takes a blind bit of notice of the reduced speed limit.
Cliff Ton 10,467
The one disappointment with the Scarab film was that it didn't show the interior of the driver's cab. I'd seen a photo of one in the past and they were a bit basic.
Brew 5,418
I can remember the grey coloured ones as well. They had an angular look as opposed the curved cab of the one in the pic. The trailer coupling was known as a 'Scammell coupling' and though simpler to connect involved a lot of moving parts. When you 'dropped' the trailer the legs were sprung loaded and lowered automatically. I found a pic but can't upload it.
plantfit 7,597
Brew, I think they were called the "Scammel mechanical horse",very angular front to the cab Rog
Brew 5,418
Yup them's 'em PF. Saw them mainly around the Midland Station / London Road area.

Brew 5,418
Just looked at the photos of the tram accident. It doesn't as though it was a massive impact, light scraping on the tram and the drivers door on the van stoved in. So how did it derail a tram that weighs almost 40 tonnes? philmayfield 6,138
The tram driver didn’t have his hands on the steeering wheel. 2
catfan 14,793
But the tram was derailed.
Brew 5,418
That's what I said, a relatively minor impact derails a tram. Are they that unstable?
catfan 14,793
Yes.
Waddo 921
Don't worry folks, in a couple of years time there will be a revolutionary new transport system. You could call them, let's say, trolley buses, don't know why nobody thought of it before... 2
Willow wilson 894
Remember the old saying "like the backend of a tram smash"? They don't ev tram smashes like theh used ter.
denshaw 2,872
What a fantastic idea Waddo, it could be an electric driven system that didn't need rails and if it broke down other vehicles could go round it. Not sure the name "trolley bus" would catch on though.
