LizzieM 9,528
Not so much ‘How’s Your Day’ but how’s our week or so gone! Last week we spent two nights in a beautiful country house hotel in Dorking attending the wedding of our niece who lives in Washington. A second marriage for both her and the Groom, 6 kids between them! Family travelled from all over the UK, USA and beyond and it was a fantastic family gathering. Then we drove to Poole with brother-in-law and wife from Victoria, BC, along with their daughters, one from Toronto and one from Costa Rica. Then off to Devon for 2 nights to catch up with an old school friend of my husband, whilst there we went to see old friends from Leighton Buzzard who have a large Equestrian Centre on Dartmoor. They told us they’re moving in June having bought Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones) Stud Farm. Our friend has always been into rock music and is the manager of ‘YES’ and has invited us to the Royal Albert Hall in June to see the band perform. When I got home (to Poole) I had to Google them! I’m not into ‘progressive rock’ but it sounds like a good night out, he’s booking our London hotel too, so it’s worth tolerating! Anyway, we’re now into Darby and Joan mode and relaxing without houseguests. That lot are all flying back to all points west tomorrow, plus one of our sons is going back to Dar es Salaam tomorrow and the other to Bahamas via Miami. Wears me out thinking about it! I need @DJ360to get me up to speed on ‘YES’ ……. I’m a 60s Mod, Motown, Atlantic and Stax artists are the ones I know!
DJ360 6,743
Sorry Lizzie, I know next to nowt about Yes as I'm not into progressive rock either. I can say they had a hit album called 'Fragile' and another called 'Tales From Topographic Oceans', but there were many others. I'm afaid their music does nothing for me. Check them out on Wikipedia. I suppose if necessary you could casually drop in "I really like Fragile and Topographic Oceans, but probably 'Oceans' better.. but then if they ask you which track you like best you're in trouble Possibly better to employ the old "I don't know much about them but I've always enjoyed what I've heard on the radio.." I have a neighbour who's really into Yes. He had a spare ticket to see Jon Anderson, Yes founder and lead singer, whose high tenor voice is to be honest the main reason I don't like Yes. So he dragged me along to the Anderson concert at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester. I was polite about it but frankly I've been to better concerts down the local Labour Club. It was a bizarre mish mash of New Age Hippy tosh and Lord of the Rings style graphics which just struck me as portraying all of the worst aspects of both, and none of the good points, in a weirdly naive and 'middle of the road' fashion. I escaped to the Gents for a bit, where two blokes were using very colourful language to describe their disappointment , then left.. I wished I could do the same. As a final insult, I had to wait while my neighbour queued up to get the obligatory Album Cover Autograph, the selfie with Mr Anderson and the sycophantic conversation "Yes, excellent Jon,.. just as good as when I saw you at.. (very long list of concert venues) etc.. I just grabbed another beer and stood aside praying for it all to end. Far better when I went with another hi-fi loving buddy to see the lovely Thea Gilmore at a nice venue in Birkenhead. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thea_Gilmore As they all do.. she was selling CDs and signing them at the end and my pal said he'd get us one each..mine as a thank you for a small favour I'd done him. He's a good mate, but a funny little character somewhat lacking in self awareness. We reached the front of the queue and my pal said to Thea: "I've already got 12 of your albums.. this will make 13..". She grinned and replied.. "That's more than I've got.." He then said "I go to all of your concerts.. " She's a pretty self-effacing lady and feigned a sort of surprised look, whereupon I winked as I whispered loudly over his shoulder..: "He's a stalker.." At that point she burst out laughing. It was a lovely moment.
DJ360 6,743
Speaking of trimmers and hair cuts... The first time I cut my own hair, during lockdown, I used a No.3 10mm comb, to do my hair and then changed to a No.2 6mm comb to trim around my ears. After a final check around I decided there were a couple of stray bits at the back so attacked them, forgetting to change back to a No.3. .. Results were, as they say.. somewhat patchy.. I'm rather better at it now... but like Margie.. I have to be very careful not to forget to fit the right comb. @Brew I have a Wahl Hair and Beard Trimmer. About 50 quid from Boots. It's not an 'industrial strength' corded one. Just battery powered and rechargeable. It lasts a good 40 minutes on a full charge, but crucially, you can get another ten minutes or so by charging for only a couple of minutes.. which is handy in emergencies. The downside is that the attachments are a little flimsy and the blades do go blunt eventually. However, replacements can be had from Amazon or eBay.
LizzieM 9,528
Well thanks for enthusing about YES Col ! But unless something really exciting is happening in our lives on June 4th we’d better go. I’ve only been in the Royal Albert Hall once before so that, in itself, is a reason to go. Might buy some earplugs and grow our hair over our ears. Our friend is such a wonderful interesting character, involved in music, football and cricket, having ‘looked after’ many well known sports personalities. We had a Christmas drinks party at our old house in Hertfordshire and Martin turned up with Mike Gatting. On another occasion we went with him to the opening of a venue called Football Football in London. He’d sat me next to Kenney Jones as he knew I was a Small Faces fan. I was thrilled! katyjay 5,091
Not really familiar with Yes. Had to Google them to see what they sang. The only song I recognised is Owner of a Lonely Heart. I do know Jon Anderson did the vocals on a Vangelis album and Rick Wakeman did some weird albums, 2 of which we have still!
Brew 5,456
My clipper is a no-name Chinese affair and the charge, via a usb outlet, lasts about thirty mins, presumably that is. Weirdly its markings rate it as 100~220v but the lead supplied is for a usb. My problem is being a lazy sod letting my hair grow too long to the point where a combine harvester might be more use. A clipper I've forgotten to charge stands no chance.
IAN FINN 825
Brew just go to the barber here they want 18 dollars for a haircut for OAPs and 5 dollars for a shave if its the same in the UK tell the barber to shave your head.
Rob.L 1,091
Saw Yes perform a few times in the 1970s, including three times at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, as well as at Reading Festival in 1975. Had all their albums, too. But having seen them on TV a while back, it’s not the same lineup as it used to be. Not one of the original members are still in the band. A bit like Trigger’s broom!

You must be joking!! I paid £18 for this clipper when Covid started. I've cut my hair four times now so still have a way to go before I get my money back.... As for shaving my head...................................
mary1947 2,099
If you have hair clippers by the name of Wahl they are German. not sure about the £50 quid ones though? Don't forget to oil them each time you have used them and to check the teeth and make sure that they are in the correct line before you use them. Now here's a story that I have never told. When we had our salon I employed a young man called Stuart he was clipper mad!!!! all of his clients who came in to have there hair trimmed all ended up with having clipper's grade no 2, up the back of there head from nape to ears, but he had the gift of the gab and the ladies just loved him. So he got away with it.

Mary, I think you will find they are an American Company founded in 1919 in Sterling, Illinois. You might wonder how I know this, well, I have been to their headquarters as when I was working we supplied some of their plastic injection moulding tools from here in Australia. Could easily have been different if not for that disastrous own goal start they gave Spurs. They certainly had enough chances but as usual did not take them.

DJ360 6,743
Wahl Clippers. Full story here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahl_Clipper From which: Quote Wahl manufactures its clippers and trimmers in its own factories in Sterling, Illinois; parts come from Germany, England, China, and Hungary, while international plants are present in China, England, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Japan. So that clears that up then ..
DJ360 6,743
P.S. Just checked the box and it says mine was 'Made in Europe'..but that doesn't mean the components weren't all made in China. The UK address for Wahl is: Wahl (UK) Ltd Sterling House, Clipper Close, Ramsgate, CT12 5GG See what they did there?

Oztalgian 3,366
It is a cold, for us, 15 degrees, wind chill down to 12, with showers heavy at times, Trying to tidy up the garden and battle the weeds, but having been soaked once decided to stay indoors for a while and pontificate on the end of the football season, hence my ramblings on "All going wrong"
Beekay 5,229
Change of subject..... Does anybody know the best way to remove the sticky residue left on tins, when removing labels? A daft question I know, but I've tried all sorts, including very hot water inside the tin, also acetone varnish remover as well as white spirits but to no avail. I want to paint and decorate these containers but cannot until I've removed the stickiness. I don't really want to use emery cloth if I can help it. Any sensible suggestions would be most helpful and gratefully recieved. Ta very muchly.
IAN FINN 825
Try a carburetor or intake cleaner or maybe petrol but clean thoroughly before painting or last resort is a wire brush on a wheel.
plantfit 7,665
WD40 Barrie, softens the glue then just wipe it off Rog

Cheers Ian, but I think a wire brush wheel would be a bit too stringent. It would fetch the base paint off, and that's why I don't want to use emery cloth...yet !! WD40 sounds a good idea Rog. I'l. Try both suggestions, before I lose heart and sandblast the bloody things.
