Ayupmeducks 1,730
I've sent mick a message, so we'll have to wait until he shows up. I thought maybe it was a problem with the members computers or their ISP, but looks like we have a site software problem.
DJ360 6,733
Can't even post with VPN now! Or at least a much longer post wouldn't send. DJ360 6,733
This is weird. Anyway. I'd suggest downloading a 'Free VPN' I can at least get on here with one and not at all without.
jonab 1,644
This is a test as well. Delete if you see fit. Back to the original machine and my post to nonnab: Been trying to contact nonnab regarding our orange conversation. I've tried at least ten times and had my post disappear into the ether on each attempt. What I wanted to say was that I am seeing a friend and ex-colleague later who is something of an expert on all things citrus (he works in the essential oils division for the company where I used to work in Grasse which is a worldwide major processor of citrus products). I agree that Bigarade and Seville oranges look very different to each other even though they are the supposed to be the same variety.
Ayupmeducks 1,730
Looks like a site software problem since the last upgrade.
jonab 1,644
Why does it always seem inevitable that software upgrades cause so much havoc - there was TSB earlier in the year, O2 earlier in the week and now this? Us mere mortals are constantly being nagged and cajoled to make regular backups yet the big players in software seem content to allow their errors and failures to cause untold amounts of damage, often with no meaningful apology or comeback in the form of recompense. (I wonder if this will go through?)
benjamin1945 16,177
Hows your day? Boring just watching old films on "talking pictures" But just noticed the date,, and 47 years ago today went to Majorja for 4 days with a "ladies dart team" for only £40,,
katyjay 5,091
That was quite expensive, LOL. We had 12 days in Yugoslavia, flight, hotel full board etc, for 36 pounds each. This was 48 years ago.

It's years since I saw a Seville and I've never seen a Bigarade so wouldn't know. Went to Grasse to the or a company that produces essential oils. The smell was wonderful. Looking at problems you all seem to have I hope this posts. I use iPad and mac laptop and had no problems, only those of my fault. Doubt it could be the fault of pc tho. jonab 1,644
nonna, I spoke to my friend re. the difference between Seville and Bigarades. He says that they are genetically very similar but the difference in appearance is due to weather and growing conditions. Seville oranges tend to be a darker colour and have rougher texture skins than do Bigarades - which, in turn, usually look more like sweet, eating oranges but sweet, they most certainly are not! Regarding Grassoise companies, I doubt very much that you visited the company I worked for – it is not open to the public for reasons I'll explain further down. There are two, possibly three companies in Grasse that exist almost solely as tourist attractions – mainly Parfumerie Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard. These are typical ‘exit through the gift shop’ types of places and represent the perfumery and flavour industries as they were in and before the early 20th century – that is effectively active museums demonstrating how things used to be – most certainly not as they are now. Modern perfume and flavour development is a part of the fine chemical industry which uses the most modern glass and stainless steel equipment, not those quaint convoluted copper items that are shown in the museums and public exhibitions. Of course, all perfumeries have their own museum full of old copper stuff, some of it must be worth an awful lot of money. The main reason that real perfumeries are not open to the public is that most of their work is highly confidential – confidential clients and confidential compositions of perfumes and flavours. A new formula for a perfume can be worth a very large amount of money (millions of whatever £, €, $, ¥) - not something for public view.

I've been wracking my brains all day to think of the place we went to in Grasse but with no luck. The visit was a day tour that our village organizes every so often ( not particularly to France but to various areas) we went to San Paul du Vence . It was years ago but I remember it was a very pretty area. I had some photos taken there but changing hosts for them over time I don't know where to look for them. Thanks for the information about the oranges.

They showed that film at High Pavement. In the run up to Christmas we had assorted 'treats'. The Carol Service at the old HP Chapel was one. Assorted plays. Class 'Christmas Parties', 'Dinky Dunn's' very 'explosive' Chemistry lectures.. and a film show in the ''SLT' (Science Lecture Theatre), for which you paid sixpence admission. I remember seeing 'Treasure Island' , and then 'The Ship That Died of Shame'. I think I've only seen the latter once more on the telly. I set the Tivo Box to record TSTDOS and also a film featuring Jack Warner and a train crash..'Train ofEvents'? Only saw a few seconds of that many years ago but somehow it stuck in my mind. Eitherway.. both are on my old Tivo box, so whether I'll see them is a bit uncertain at present.

Thanks for the information about the oranges. St Paul de Vence is, indeed a very nice place and I have some friends who live there. The countryside around the village provides a lot of the raw material to keep the Grasse distilleries busy - mostly jasmine, rose, tuberose, mimosa and, not so much now, mousse de chêne. The company I worked for in Grasse was Robertet located in the main town on Avenue Sidi Brahim and on an industrial estate just outside the main town on le Plan de Grasse, Avenue Jean Maubert. (Jean Maubert was the owner of Robertet when I worked there). All findable on Google maps.
