Brew 5,005
It seems a game of football robs people of what little common sense they had. For some, they or someone they came into contact with, it may well be the last game they see... enjoy muppets. catfan 14,757
Infection rates are rising is this due to more testing ? Are the tests accurate ? The death rate is still very tiny & are they actually Covid deaths or deaths with positive test within the last ,28 days ? 1
LizzieM 9,086
We need to get on with life and get rid of the fear factor. Keep washing your hands and wearing a mask inside shops but goodness me, let’s get this country moving again.

The death rate is still very tiny & are they actually Covid deaths or deaths with positive test within the last ,28 days ? Good questions CF and I don't think there can be a definitive answer though I trust the official figures rather more than the Covid deniers, FaceBook wannabe experts and rumour mongers. Death rates may be tiny as a percentage of the population (does that make it OK?), but quite a large percentage of an individuals family. The virus is spread mainly by close encounters of the contaminated kind and those infected and spreading the disease are usually asymptomatic (they have no symptoms), so quite happily charge around Tesco or the market square blissfully unaware they are putting people at risk, or maybe don't give a damn. We need to remember Covid is global, it's infected and still infecting millions - but started with just one single individual. Other questions that cannot be answered with certainty is how much more serious would it be if we took zero precautions or if people fully followed the recommendations would we now be free, clear and getting on with our lives? Looking at it logically it's hardly going to break us if we just use a bit of common sense, it's not rocket science. 2
Stavertongirl 1,639
We received a txt message from the place we go to on Sunday for lunch to cancel our reservation yesterday as they had a positive test on one of their staff. It means some of the other workers are now self isolating so they are only doing takeaways for a while. We haven’t been contacted by track and trace (is this still going haven’t heard much about it recently) so presume we didn’t come into contact with the staff member thankfully. The thing that annoys me is when covoid is compared with flu. It isn’t flu (yes I do know there are deaths from flu every year). For one thing flu is seasonal, covoid isn’t, flu mutates very slowly covoid mutates quickly and seems to be getting more virulent not less. I have seen a report of a strain from Peru (and yes there are cases here) which is once again making the vaccination a lot less effective. It seems inevitable that there will eventually be a strain that will get round the vaccine. It does seem like we are (unwillingly) in an experiment to see what happens after July 19th with the government reneging on their responsibility to, at least, try to keep the population safe. Headlines in the papers say we are a “Petri dish” with the rest of the world waiting to see what happens when we “open up”. Would anyone like to hazard a guess? I really hope that it all goes well but I will still be wearing my mask and keeping my distance. 1
catfan 14,757
Many of the so called experts have been completely wrong in their estimations. Was it Chris Whitty who quoted Covid deaths 10 X more than they actually we're ? I am not a Denver of Covid but just who do we believe ? Hospitals are not at breaking point as some will tell you. Brew 5,005
What you say is true and no one denies there have been mistakes and misunderstandings. Collating data on a nationwide scale must be a mammoth task in a situation such as this and perfect knowledge is only possible after the event. Like you I doubt much of what I read (including that the England team are demigods) and some of the so called 'popular press' should be ashamed of the hype printed and the way they play fast and loose with the facts. 'Hospitals in crisis' is a more dramatic headline than 'they're very busy at the moment'. 3
nonnaB 4,672
I'm surprised that Boris is attempting to "openup". Why cant he wait til after the football has been finalised ( a few weeks after) and when numbers have decreased not increased. I'm all for everyone being free but at the moment I think its folly but can understand.

You'd have half the population going into withdrawal symptons. Things have to be done and at the " right" time. By the way I'm not a football fan but happy for those who are. It'll bring a lot of pleasure to them.

LizzieM 9,086
A friend of ours went out to get a few bits in his local supermarket in Suffolk last week and then he and his wife popped into Wagamama for a quick meal. Next day he got ‘pinged’ and told to isolate for 10 days. He was so annoyed, he’s had two jabs and no symptoms but he’s been stuck at home for a week already and wants (and needs) to get to work.
Stavertongirl 1,639
That is the dilemma of isolating. Having no symptoms doesn’t mean you haven’t got it unfortunately, the same with having two jabs and you could still spread it. Having a test after a week say, then resuming work if it is negative and keep having a test every day until the end if the isolation period would seem better. The only problem with that is the accuracy of the Lateral flow tests it would have to be a “proper” test. This is why people are, apparently, uninstalling the covoid app. I must admit I agree with nonnaB about the opening up. It seems like madness to drop everything in one go especially as the cases are now rising so fast again. The figures of 50,000 - 100,000 cases a day are frightening, it seems we are back at herd immunity again although I am not sure if that works when the virus mutates so quickly, perhaps someone with more knowledge can put me right on that. The worrying thing is that a mutation will circumvent the vaccine and we are back to square one again as it seems the virus is ramping up rather than becoming more benign (spelling?). Plus if deaths are now 1 in a 1000, that is 50 to 100 deaths a day. I know things have to open up as businesses are suffering badly but still think face masks should be mandatory in shops etc. it is only a small thing after all. Then it’s your own choice if you go to the pub etc. or not. As to schools, it would seem they are being thrown to the wolves somewhat. I am invigilating at the moment, last 2 exams next week. The school has cases but are taking all precautions as mandated and most of the kids wear masks, at least the ones we have been involved with, so why end it? After all prevention is better than cure especially with this virus.

nonnaB 4,672
We are having increased cases now.last week it was under 100 now last night it was 1500+. We are still wearing masks although we can go without outdoors. France has an obligation now to get vaccine done to those who work with the public. If not they don't work and don't go anywhere Wonder if it will have a domino effect with other countries following. One thing is for sure its not going to go away on its own. Keep safe everyone
Oztalgian 2,592
Cases are increasing across Australia and we have nowhere near as many fully vaccinated as the UK due to a total fail by our federal government. We have closed our state to almost all others except returning residents and over fifty % of the Australian population is in lockdown. Amid all this, luckily, in Australia we only have 983 current cases with 128 receiving hospital treatment and 22 of those in ICU. Quarantine is mandatory for all people entering Australia. The rules of what can open and can't and restrictions on numbers is different in each state and I watch with interest the different rules being mandated or advised in the UK re Wales, Scotland and England as so called "Freedom Day" approaches. This pandemic is a long way from over but it certainly looks like vaccination reduces the severity of the disease if you contract it. Keep safe everyone.
Brew 5,005
There will be a new wave of infections after lockdown ends, of that I have little doubt. There will of course be those who welcome the new sense of freedom and those who scream incompetence and irresponsibility with the blessed blonde one stuck in the middle. We can only hope that a years worth of data plus a high percentage of vaccinations give the statisticians enough to accurately predict what will happen next.
DJ360 6,183
Brew. I think that 'will be'..is already passed. Covid infection rates, hospitalisations and deaths are already rising in all areas, and yet morons countrywide are still refusing vaccinations, whilst many refuse to wear masks even now, before 'lockdown' ends. Part of the problem in my view is that huge numbers of people no longer watch TV news..which, whilst it is far from perfect, at least keeps us reasonably well informed about developments. Huge numbers of people, including at least one of my daughters, seem to only get any news from social media, which of course exposes them to the lunatic fringe just as much as, in fact probably more so, than the voice of reason. nonnaB 4,672
Cases on the increase here too. Airports, nowhere are checking passengers. We noticed that when we went to Sicily a few weeks ago. Now in a few weeks time we are going again ( we hope) unless things get really worse. 177 no vax workers have had their wages stopped because they refuse to be vaccinated. I know it takes away freedom but I think Macron has the right idea. Wish our lot would consider it because there are thousands over 60 's that havent been vaccinated at all or only had one dose.
