  1. Have you noticed how many people today seem to want a confrontation especially over Parking.........? Yesterday i went to my local supermarket ..which is always very busy and difficult to Park......often see people arguing over Parking....... Well yesterday i thought it was my turn.to be 'got at''.......the only space i found had a large 4x4 parked at least a foot into the space i decided on....Managed to squeeze in but left myself no room to open my door....or the 4x4 owners........ Without looking for a confrontation i decided to wait until the 4x4 owners return....when i woul

  2. CT, ‘Yet again’ is very true. Surely another year hasn’t gone by….. There must be a formula somewhere that explains the acceleration of time as we get older. Thanks for your good wishes for the second time today.

  4. You should have worked in customer services Ben. I did a year working for a local council which had quite a lot of rundown areas and rundown people I hasten to add. I always took it as a challenge to calmly turn a negative into a positive and usually it worked. Everyone is happy then. Well done you!

  5. I had a phone call yesterday from Sonia Kataria (BBC online content) to chat about my involvement with the clock and she's posted this article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-68512528 Separately, I had a phone call from BBC Radio Nottingham and recorded something that will go out in their weekend bulletins (I didn't think to ask what time to listen)

  6. Personally, since the internet was ‘invented’ 30 odd years ago I’ve not read many books, but I read on line content all day long, as well as the daily paper that we still have delivered. Neither have I been a library member since I was a kid. Two of my good friends studied Librarianship at University and I have 3 other friends who have spent their entire working life in libraries. They’re all retired now but I wonder whether Librarianship is still offered as a degree course. I can understand why the City Council are closing libraries to save money, although there are other facilities in the

  10. I visited the library in Sutton in Ashfield last week. They have transcripts of parish records and I wanted to check the burials in the churchyard of St Wilfrid's at Kirkby as some of my ancestors were interred there around 200 years ago. I noticed that they also had microfiche records of parish registers. I haven't seen those for many, many years as most people now use the library's subscription to sites such as Ancestry and Find My Past but, sometimes, it's quicker to look at local resources as not all parish records are available on Ancestry by any means. I settled down in fron

  11. Lots of truth in that. We have lost our Local Library in the last year or so, as have several other Wards in St Helens. Interestingly, the main reason quoted for closure in Billinge was 'problems with the library roof', same as at least one local swimming pool and our original Parish Council Office. There must be some lousy roofers round here.. It's certainly true that the Internet has made information more easily available. I also rarely read an actual book, except for dipping into reference works, as I prefer to listen, via 'Audible'. However, I'm not sure that buyi

  12. The Ribblehead Viaduct is a magnificent structure, to stand underneath it and look up is awe inspiring. When we were there we also went to see the church at Chapel-Le-Dale where there is a memorial to the railway workers. Records at the church indicate that there are over 200 burials of men, women and children who died during the construction.

  13. I was presenting it as an example of the smokescreen and how to present a negative as a positive. As a key performance indicator it has it's uses to economists but little relevance to ordinary folk unless someone is trying to sell you a cat in a sack

  14. The cuts are for employees not employers. Another thought, the planned cuts will be unpopular to say the least, but they are sneakily planned to be announced after the election.

  15. Hunt made a surprisingly good speech with some good points, some obscure reasoning, some humour (even Starmer laughed), some barbs against Raynor taking advantage of Thatchers right to buy, and a decent smoke screen. It was fairly complex and may yet prove to be a poison chalice for Labour. His aspirations and predictions for what the budget will achieve are a wish list and highly unlikely to come to fruition; but we can say that about every budget. He may also be paying it forward to give the Tories in opposition ammunition when Labour have to cancel or rescind all or part of
