A building which had been empty for several years - and probably remembered by several people here - has finally disappeared. It was to the rear of building known currently as Ocean, and previously Sherwood Rooms and Astoria. Latterly it was a chinese.......like this:- But now it looks like this. And from the back it has opened up a view of the Castle which hasn't been possible for quite a few years.

Warehouse fire in Meadows (think good Friday 1965 or 66?)
Cliff Ton replied to colly0410's topic in 'The Medders'
Borrowing this photo from Lenton Times, where they say "Part of the factory units situated at the end of Castle Boulevard as they looked in 1978. In the 1980s these buildings were later to suffer a serious fire which prompted the buildings subsequent demolition. After it was demolished the MFI place was built on the site, and when they went bankrupt the MFI shed was demolished and replaced by this. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10057&hl=%2Bmodern+%2Bbuildings -
Seems to be this. http://www.nottinghampost.com/Hucknall-town-centre-lockdown-armed-raid-snooker/story-20806667-detail/story.html

Agree that Medilink is only suitable for people who have reasonable mobility; if you have any disability or just very old and frail, it may not be suitable. Bear in mind that it is also used by people who work at QMC and City, and medical students travelling from one site to the other, so at certain times of day it can be difficult to get on the thing.
-
I've used Medilink a few times and it's the only way to go to QMC. I wouldn't dream of trying to park there. The cost is irrelevant; there simply isn't enough space on the site to park all the cars who want to go there. They'd have to tarmac over all of Dunkirk and most of Lenton to make a car park big enough to accomodate everyone who goes to QMC in an average day.

So fascinating I've locked it.

I'm always impressed by the fact that when someone famous dies - whether they were celebrity, royalty, sport, politics etc etc - within a few hours of the death there are always several good jokes doing the rounds about that particular person. Are the jokes all stored somewhere, waiting for the appropriate death to happen?

Learned something new today. I have never in my life come across the word "orming" until this morning. It must be very regional and very select. Although now I've learned it, I can see it might be pretty useful.

Carni, I reckon Bilbraborn's comments are probably the answer to your question. Go to Picture the Past and in the Search box put Reading. Loads of Reading Rooms.

About half way up, it seems.

Toons, lace-making machinery
Cliff Ton replied to LizzieM's topic in Nottingham Companies Then and Now
Why me !!!! But you may be right. The only "big arch" I can think of is Hounds Gate, although it's not in the Lace Market. http://goo.gl/maps/KF4uc -
Yes it is. That rare thing, a Co-op which hasn't closed. http://goo.gl/maps/YVPHB

Music/Piano Shop on Sneinton Road
Cliff Ton replied to The Pianoman's topic in St Anns, Sneinton & Colwick
This is a nearly-but-not-quite photo. It shows Sneinton Road looking towards Carlton Road, but slightly below where the piano man was. 117 Sneinton Road would be just over and behind the photographer's right shoulder. It's changed a bit, because this is the equivalent today. -
Looking on old maps for the time, there's nothing marked as Collins Maternity Home on Waverley Street, although there are several large buildings which could be the place. Do either of you have the number on Waverley Street to locate it accurately?

It must be spring.....first use of lawnmower this year.

Music/Piano Shop on Sneinton Road
Cliff Ton replied to The Pianoman's topic in St Anns, Sneinton & Colwick
No surprise to find that the building no longer exists. It would have been right next to the William Booth/Salvation Army site at Notintone Place. Looking at Streetview, the branch of Lloyds Pharmacy is 113 Sneinton Road, so move two to the right and that's where the shop was. http://goo.gl/maps/BVASp -
This is The Firs - http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM003461&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM003459&prevUrl= It still exists and is now a warden-aided complex (or something similar). You can have a look around the outside courtesy of Streetview - http://goo.gl/maps/GxA54 or look at it from above http://binged.it/PdKVKx Apparently I was born there - like you, although I don't actually remember it. I've never heard of it previou

I have hidden two posts because of the language used. The thread started on the subject of bus fares.

Looking at 'Britain from Above', you get a pretty good view of the site as it would have been in the 1930s. The road going left-right is Western Boulevard, and the road going north-southish is Aspley Lane.

I didn't think I ever went there personally, but I remember my grandad - who worked at Players - talking about the place. He was a big cricket fan and would "go to Player's rec" to be an umpire at what I presume were local league cricket matches.
