#26 Scriv. ive been waiting for someone to say 'who wants their kids to work dahn pit' .I can understand that old community spirit and all that went with it,but what a God awful way for man to earn a living (and a fortune for the old owners) many members of my family and old School mates worked in the Pits,and i never envied them,when we left Sec.school in Bestwood it was almost expected we'd want to do it,...........not on your Nelly comrade.

I don't have a particular fav. in terms of music Genre' i like all sorts depending on mood,place and time,was never really into the heavier rock of the 70s,but on my recent holiday came across a band called 'Travelling band' who i could'nt get enough of,so went back to the bar they played in most nights,the wife could'nt believe i was 'rock n rolling' in me shorts till midnight (must have looked a bugger) did'nt even wear me Tie,...........nice to get home and put one on though, Even bought one of their 'T' shirts,which ive given to my youngest Son,like i say time and pla

Love to hear stories like that Rob,ive seen lots of similar incidents throughout my work (and out of work lol.) ive never been a fighter but when i was much younger and about 3 stone heavier i was very rarely bothered by anyone,but noticed in my 60s some would get a bit cheeky,.......just shows there's alot of cowards out there.,and love to see em get their cumupence',

Great to see your old progs. Merthyr, many of the old players names bring back fond memories,also nice to see the teams set out in the old formations,proper full backs,half backs and even inside forwards,...............then it got all complicated,...........deep lying centre forwards,wing backs and defensive midfielders,..........ah for simpler days and players who's name you could pronounce ,lol.

Used to love the Boxing ones, £5 if you lasted 3 rounds with one of their boxers,not many did.........Also once went to see the girls doing dance of the 7 veils' and got a shock to see one of em was my 16 yr old cousin,.............its still our secret,and have a laugh with her about it when we meet.lol.

Merthyr i actually remember that match at Crystal Palace,........i was working in Nuneaton with a Palace supporter,..........i was gutted.

Never had a school dinner,always went home,and when Mam was working went to Grandma's along with 5 or 6 cousins,always felt sorry for one lad in my class,he was the only one entitled to free school dinners,and the Teacher always announced the fact when he collected his voucher.

Nestles condensed milk sandwich used to love it in the 50s,..........roundabout 1960 when i worked in a shop (marsdens.lol.) Nestles was 1/8 or the cheaper version Fussells 1/-,............can't remember the price of owt from last week...........but still remember prices from the 60s,....odd init.

BEEN BUYING Basford Bystander a number of years,really great for Nottstalgians,purchased latest edition this morning (35p) great stuff about Mando's ice cream,war time on Highbury vale,Vernon park and much more,the outlets that sell it are limited i get mine bi monthly from Don and Johns Barbers,Nottingham rd.............It covers the wider area of Basford,inc.Hyson Green and Carrington.
