  1. We had a great unplanned gathering with neighbours. Just natural, relaxed, fun and a few drinks. I thought of all the rubbish about the "Millenium bug" and as I expected nothing went wrong with the computers or the video recorder (remember then!) so it was all a big sales con.
  2. When autumn arrived and we got the cold, misty mornings my mum always said "this is Goose Fair weather".
  3. On Saturday 14th March 1959 my dad went to Hillsborough to watch Nottingham Forest play Aston Villa. I looked through the official programme and found this instruction to those who attended the match: "DON'T PACK UP PACKING UP: This is an All-Ticket Match with room for every ticket holder. May we ask all those on the tiers between the barriers to pack closely and thus obviate the difficulties caused when individually more space is occupied than is really necessary. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION." When I first read this I was horrified and felt quite cold thinking of what has happened the
  4. #50 MargieH I agree with you about the importance of recording these things for our children. I found this site when I was looking for detail about Nottingham between 1901, when my grandfather came to work in the newspaper office and 1982 when my dad died. I have written a description of grandfathers house for my son. He read it and asked questions and I put in more detail in response to this. His questions made me remember the extra detail. My mother used to tell me lots of stories about her childhood in Yorkshire and I wish I had written it down. Now I am trying to remember what she told m
  5. This site is an archive. We are sharing facts and memories to record social history in Nottingham. This is good record keeping. The excellent discussion about different things clarifies details for the benefit of all. Whatever our ages we are using the technology for a good purpose, in a safe and moderated environment. The jokes are great and the association games good fun. Enjoy!
  6. I joined in January and this site is brilliant. New members are being welcomed regularly. As a recently joined member there is so much to read on all the threads that it is taking me a while to explore all of it and I guess this is the same for others as they join. I have learned a lot and experienced happy memories. The quality of posts is excellent and it is quality that counts not quantity. Lets be positive!
  7. #2 Cliff Ton I remember the Guardian Journal. My dad worked there on the night shift. This film is brilliant. Thanks bamber for posting it. The part showing the newspaper office is typesetting by hand. My dad worked on a linotype machine. In the late 1960s the staff were trained to use a typewriter keyboard ready for the installation of the computer system The linotype keyboard was set out differently.
  8. barclaycon I agree totally. The news is dumbed down to the level of children's TV where everything is in short sequences. This format on children's TV does not encourage a decent level of concentration in children.
  9. Money from tax paid by honest hard working citizens is used to keep them in prison. Savings from this could be spent on NHS and other essential services.
  10. Violence in the workplace is gross misconduct. In workplace disciplinary procedures it would normally lead to a fair dismissal. I am surprised that the matter did not go to the police first before the internal disciplinary investigation. The law and the workplace procedures are there to protect workers.
  11. Best wishes to both of you. Thinking of you.
  12. #11 firbeck Thanks for your post. I remember the abandoned boats on the canal. This just brought back great memories. When I was little my grandfather took me out for long walks along the canal and we looked at those boats. I also remember walking with him over the lock gates. I remember being a bit scared but followed him over the gates. Those were very special times.
  13. When I saw the photo I thought it was an entry for the next Specsavers advert.
  14. This advice from NCC is totally unacceptable. Library, school and many workplace computers are on networks. These are monitored and so any data entered could be accessed by those who police the acceptable use policies that are in place. NCC should provide an alternative. There could also be equalities issues for some people in this situation.
  15. When we were coming back from holiday in Shetland we saw the Aurora from the ferry. I was up on deck for a late night walk and the lights were just amazing! A very special experience. I was not impressed with Northlink ferries, not as good as P and O Scottish Ferries who ran the service before. Shetland is wonderful.
  16. I have my ID card, my late mother's and my late grandfather's. I also have the radio licence that my dad bought when he and my mum lived in a flat on Sneinton Dale in 1949. My parents kept paperwork and it is so interesting as snapshots of the past.
  17. A very good and valid point. To make returns all on line would be divisive and discriminates against sections of the population who do not wish to use a computer. It is the same problem when on line payments for goods and services is given preferential treatment.
  18. Commo, I agree with you totally. That woman had not got a clue. I remember the last part of food rationing, going with my mum to the Co-op on Cockington Road and buying sugar in blue bags and the cheese they used to cut with a wire. My mum was a good cook and we never had food like that shown on the programme. My mum came from Yorkshire and I remember her serving Yorkshire pudding with gravy before we had the main meal. I hated gravy so I had sugar on my Yorkshire pudding. This must have been after rationing ended. I never had school dinners as I always went home. Mum cooked for all of
  19. The on line tax return is easy to do but what concerns me is that the new proposals for tax assessment may mean that they start looking at your bank account, The problem with this is how safe will the data they collect be? More of the "big brother" state. The more data they collect about us the more it gets lost.
  20. I agree LizzieM. My grandfather bought us our TV. Before that I used to go to the neighbours house to watch TV.
  21. Thanks Michael, loved that one. Great memories.
  22. Great pictures, great memories. Does anyone remember "Rag Tag and Bobtail"? 1955 or 1956,
  23. In the 1950's I loved "The King and "I, especially the dress worn by Deborah Kerr for the song "shall we dance". I saved pocket money for ages so I could by the sound track on vinyl disc.
  24. Thank you Tony for reminding me of the 3D experience that came before South Pacific. It was called Tod AO. I had forgotten all about that until you mentioned it. This film was a brilliant experience. These days if I see 3D or Imax film at the cinema it makes me feel travel sick. Bit of a shame!
  25. On a couple of occasions recently my work has taken me to Nottingham, at Phoenix Park. They book me in at the Premier Inn there. It is just over the road from the Phoenix Park tram stop. Trams to the city centre run until about midnight. The hotel is modern but the staff are brilliant, so friendly and helpful. The location is quiet for an excellent night's sleep. Slept like the dead. Good car parking and very easy access from the M1. I hope this helps.
