Kohinoor 2
On 26/08/2014 at 4:26 PM, PeverilPeril said: Just found this topic and can confirm that the Koh-i-Nor (Just below the bank on Alfreton Rd backing onto Peveril St.) was the first in Nottingham. The owner was Mr Udin and his son, Royce Udin went to Berridge and was also in the scouts with me. The resto was operating before 1950. There was always speculation about Mrs Udin - being white but Royce was almost black like his dad. Really nice lad was Royce. About 30 years ago I went in for a curry and asked after Royce. I was told that he had returned to India and was a very very very rich man. Thats interesting to know as Royce was my half brother and he actually went back to Bangladesh i guess in those days it would have been East Paklstan and sadly died poor and destitute in about 2002 i was with him in summer of 1995 in bangladesh i spent 6 weeks with him Mr Uddin was my father. Royce was my dads first son my father married 3 times the second time was to a white woman called Joan. Jjoan and dad had 5 children my dad sold the kohinoor restaurant in 1985, i only found this thread as i was looking for old photos of my dads restaurant on alfreton road and cant find any
PeverilPeril 3,300
Sorry to hear that Royce passed away like that. He would have been about 63/64. The things that I remember him by are his cheerfulness, smart clothes, polished shoes, and never mastering the art of walking on his hands, He managed to do a hand stand and then came crashing down. I visited him at home several times. His mum and dad were always welcoming.
Jill Sparrow 10,398
Welcome to Nottstalgia, Kohinoor. Although I never went inside, I passed the restaurant every day on my way to and from the city centre in the late 70s. I'm sure there must be some photos somewhere and Cliff Ton is the chap to find them.
Cliff Ton 10,547
Based on what has been said on previous posts, this might be the nearest you get to a photo of the Koh-i-Nor. 1

Craig Strongman 13
I know this thread has lay dormant for a while, but does anyone know what happened to who I believed was a one time owner of the Koh-I-Noor? His name was/is Pervez Malik, many called him Peter, coincidentally he was also married to an English woman, and the last time I saw them was when the casino on Maid Marion way was still the Stakis Regency Casino. i believe he sold the place on to Mr Udin. philmayfield 6,275
Koh-I-Nor on Alfreton Rd - wasn’t that one of the first Indian restaurants in Nottingham. I’ve never been as I always thought it looked rather seedy. I do remember passing on the 43/44 trolley bus from Mellish into town back in the 50’s/60’s and seeing the name of the licencee as something like MD Luckman Udin. My friend Royce Udin was the son of the owner. Found another picture of him last week, taken when we were in the Scouts.

FLY2 10,109
Always arranged works outings there for the lads during my last few years at work, as the chicken korma was delicious. Bombay at Mapperley for last nights treat. Best in the area without a doubt. Can't remember what I had, but it was prawns, prawns and more prawns !
mercurydancer 1,104
ian123. I have been visiting the Laguna for about 30 years and always get a welcome from Tony Verma. I have never had anything less than superb. Last visited just before Christmas. Superb as usual. Going back 30 years it was a regular haunt for a Friday night after the karate lesson. Never less than 3 but that would go on to about 10-15. There was never any trouble from drunks on a Friday night!
IAN123. 9,325
I have to agree Mercury..when over in the spring...a visit is on the cards. Since living in town as a kid-those lovely smells coming from Indian and Jamaican kitchens...of course the mums were only too glad to give you a bowl of something. Thinking back..those ladies were probaly lonely..miles from home and not getting many smiles from neighbours.

radfordred 6,284
Treated ourselves to our first lock-down takeaway last night from 'Rikshaw Urban Indian Kitchen' on Mansfield Road, bit pricey, but we did order a lot, about to have chicken Desi Dhaba & chili paneer bites & half a naan bread for breakfast
philmayfield 6,275
God, what a way to start the day. It can only get better!
LizzieM 9,539
Mmmm, garlic naan bread and marmalade. We always ordered too much for Indian takeaways Red, learned now to just order enough for one and and share between the two of us. However the other evening, when it was still summer, we ordered a meal from Saagar in Sherwood, to eat with friends who came round (to eat in the garden of course....... we have a large patio table) We each ordered 1 dish plus 2 rice and 2 naan, the bill was an astounding £75, and that was with a 10% discount. The food was rubbish and they won’t be getting our custom again.
Beekay 5,261
Coulda done egg and chips, woulda been a lot cheaper. Can always spice it up with curried beans.
philmayfield 6,275
The Sagar used to be very good but haven’t been for about 15 years. Different management now probably.
Rob.L 1,091
Saagar and Rikshaw are OK, but the best takeaway Indian meals we’ve found locally are from Karikana or Spice in Mapperley. They’re both reasonably priced, too, Any leftover sauce gets frozen and used in homemade curries.
