Bilbraborn 1,594
AEC renown was the first type of bus I drove in service after passing my test. Also the only type of bus available I hadn't done a days training on. All my newly passed mates started in the morning on quiet roads and empty buses. Not muggings here. No!! My first job was taken up in the street at 4PM going into town. It was full standing and I drove all the way into town with the doors open as I couldn't find the lever to close them. Also. I kept wondering what the loud banging noise was. I soon found out. I was shaking so much that my foot was banging on the gas pedal. Within a couple of days, all fear had gone. Nice buses but cussed to drive. I much preferred the Leyland and Daimler rear entrance buses with either crash box (Leyland) or epi-cyclic gearbox (Daimler). I absolutely hated Leyland Atlanteans. They were too big for the narrow streets of Glasgow.
catfan 14,793
The only good thing I remembered about the Renowns were they had a brilliant braking system, stop on a tanner.
Bilbraborn 1,594
I can't remember them going fast enough to need to stop quickly.
mitch1 7
Anyone tell me the location in post 44 of the 64 bus going to Bestwood Estate is please? Thanks.
Bubblewrap 3,815
Milton Street outside Victoria Station before 1966
roger peatman 337
I can't remember them going fast enough to need to stop quickly. They were the fastest of all the 'deckers at the time
StephenFord 866
Re #54 - actually, it wasn't going TO Bestwood Estate when the picture was taken. It was just about to turn into the Trinity Square terminus. I believe the 64 went to Gladehill Road in those days. It's probably quite a while before 1966, because it pre-dates the new paint-job with wide areas of cream between the decks.
Bubblewrap 3,815
I was looking at the trolley bus wires in the top L/H corner of the picture.
Merthyr Imp 729
Yes, I think the repainting into the 'brighter' livery was done in the 1963/64 period. Maybe started in 1962, I can't remember.
Bilbraborn 1,594
Not in Glasgow they weren't. Mind you I think by the time I got to drive them they were trying to get all routes one man operated and that meant getting rid of all the old buses. Shame as I really loved the old Leylands. At least you actually drove them. The Atlanteans were just so cumbersome and we had some of the originals which were well and truly knackered.
Enigma. 1,533
acquired this photo of a Nottingham Trolleybus marked No 43 to Bulwell Market , but wondered if anyone can work out where it was taken please?
denshaw 2,878
Is it the terminus at Trent bridge?
Cliff Ton 10,494
If denshaw is right, then the large building behind the bus would be the Town Arms. Digging around, I found a very similar photo which is definitely in that location.
Enigma. 1,533
thanks Denshaw and thanks Cliff Ton for clearing that up so quickly
NewBasfordlad 3,599
Used to get off the 43 there on a regular basis to go fishing from the steps just round the back of the Town Arms. If I remember correctly there was an ice cream stall and a small café just along from that spot.
catfan 14,793
Parked just before the turnaround outside the public toilets.
notty ash 372
The one in #63 looks absolutely immaculate - as if it were brand new. Never mind trams - bring back the trolleybuses!
The Pianoman 1,535
So from what you have all said about its location, are we saying that it is at the way into Victoria Embankment? Surely Trolleys never went across Trent Bridge.
colly0410 1,183
Can't ever remember trolley wires going over Trent Bridge, they went part way along the Embankment then along Bunbury Street to the bus depot. My mate lived across the road from the depot & I was fascinated watching the trolley buses going past, wasn't the same when the diesel buses took over.
Cliff Ton 10,494
So from what you have all said about its location, are we saying that it is at the way into Victoria Embankment? Surely Trolleys never went across Trent Bridge. Correct, they didn't. The closest they got to going over Trent Bridge was the location shown in the photos, which is the last thing before crossing the bridge.
mercurydancer 1,104
Definitely Trent Bridge terminus. I went to Mundella and the 43 back to Radford Road left from there at 15:50.
StephenFord 866
...and another at 15.52 1/2 and another at 15.55... !
