Well come on Ashley, you obviously know!!!

You raise an interesting point Ashley. While sabotaging my own thread, I note that the gentleman refered to in the princely insult is an officer in the British Army. If you were an experienced NCO under RPG and mortar fire by the Taleban in the Helmand Province, would you respect, trust and follow the orders of such an officer, I doubt it, I'd always be suspicious and probably be prepared to 'accidentally' shoot him myself rather than be put into what could be construed as a difficult situation where religious loyalties are challenged. Rightly or wrongly, after our constant brainwashing by t

I hope you didn't mis-spell your name and had to scrounge another 6d. Ashley The last Coronation Class to be de-streamlined was City of Lancaster in May 1949, it couldn't have been anything to do with City of Leeds as that loco was never built with a streamlined casing. I've seen some pictures of these streamliners in wartime and they were really filthy and neglected, and in common with many locos, painted black. I've had a thought, when the railways were nationalised in 1948, different liveries were tried out including blue, it wouldn't surprise me if there were exhibitions around the cou

I remember those old tag machines, you're right Beefsteak it was on the bridge behind the ticket hall at Midland. They were red, had long legs and a big dial, you put your 6d? in via one of those sliding coin slots, set the dial on the top and punched the appropriate number or letter with a handle at the side. I'm sure you had a maximum number of digits you could emboss. When you had finished, you moved the handle backwards, the tag appeared in a chrome cup container out the front, that's when you found out your mistakes and had to nag for another 6d, they were quite common around stations al

I recall seeing plans for the pre GC east to west railway too Ashley. It was in an A5 size book I got from Arnold library, forget the name. Anyway a question for those with long memories. I took the kids fro a walk along the old GN leen valley yeterday. We started at Riepark nera the bottom of Hucknall Rd where it bends round along Bestwood Rd. I know after groupping that a spur of the Great Central was created by the golf course so that trains could come off GC and run along the embankment behind Bestwood railway club ( now Sports and social) then across Hucknall road onto the GN leen val

Hey Ashley, I think the vist to the council house was for the mandatory civic tiffin. Images show off the buildings though and it seems we had a sunny day for once. When the Clifton Bridge was opened the road from the bridge to the Nottingham Knight was not completed and of course what we now call the A453 wasn't a trunk road. The A453 was the Nottingham to Ashby trunk road and went through Beeston and Long Eaton to Sawley Bridge, Castle Donington etc. The A453 was only re-routed over Clifton Bridge and south of the Trent in the 1980's

Oh yes Ashley! Absolutely! I thought I was the only one to detest this. It seemed that doing that was a ticket to fame... and it went on for so many years. You could see Simon Cowels eyes light up when any fool did it. I remember one of the extremely rare occasions that I watched the program when a girl came on with an absolutely fabulous natural voice.. unstrained, untortured, no face grimmacing ... She was out the door in seconds. That was the last time I watched that stupid program. -
Ashley. A Night To Remember was one of my favourite films. I have only recently watched Titanic, as I couldn't believe it could outshine the original one with Kenneth More. I loved him, another of his was The Admirable Crighton about being shipwrecked and he was the butler. I saw Call Me Madam at the Futurist.

I see you got the Christmas spirit early then Ashley!!

Ashley, perhaps the topic's run out of steam?

not so sure about being a Law Ashley,,,,, if anyone is considering doing things 'legal' they ought to check on that first. You may be right in saying that as a 'charging' (s'cuse the pun) sparky, they may have to be certificated,,,, but as for D.i.Y,,,, I'm not so sure mate. In my case - the very friendly jobs-worth that I was talking to said that the work had to be done first,,,, accompanied by a certificate (now,,,, where's me printer,,,,) as an ex plumber & electrician,,,,,, after installing thousands of both,,,,,, it seems that I (& thousands like me) cannot be trusted to do a
