  1. We have two 8’x12’ greenhouses. In one we grow 14 tomato plants, usually Shirley. In the other we grow 4 Beefstake tomatoes, 4 cucumbers and a mixture of peppers and aubergines. Both greenhouses are now cleared out, cleaned and ready to go. I lit my three year old bonfire on Saturday which had become massive. About 20’ by 10’. It was a spectacular blaze! My veg garden had grown over since my hip problem and it’s getting a bit too late to rotovate it now. I might hire a deturfer, shift the grass and rotovate it ready for next year. We can buy fresh, locally grown vegetables from the shop in the
  2. I think it's far from that simple and in any event, when does a council recycling scheme flip from being a service, to enforcement? Local Authorities have Waste Management and increasingly Recycling as part of their statutory duties and there is a long history of such, going back to the days of 'Muck Majors' and 'Night Soil' men and much earlier. Firstly though.. what happened before such recycling centres existed? My only memory is of the old style galvanised steel bin, which would mostly just contain coal ash and maybe a few cans or jars, but then milk, pop and other
  3. Get it built up for bonfire night phil should be a good blaze.
  4. We call sycamores ‘weed trees’. This one’s in an ancient hedge. The seeds carry and spring up everywhere. I’m forever chopping down sycamore saplings, oak saplings and blackberry brambles. My bonfire heap gets bigger day by day.
  5. Monday evening the cooker joined bonfire night display. The cooker on Monday evening decided to just go bang and cock the hob up , well not sure what to do ask the expert master, It;s just blown a fuse. Now the cooker is only 2 months old, well master checked all fuse's and they all seem to be working. Now only being a baby it was under 1 year grantee so finding the phone num of customer service gave them a call. Half an hour later still on the phone it was one of those silly people that kept repeating themselves. Then after all the rubbish questions it says "The customer Services clos
  6. Going back o the 2 pubs Horse and Groom Linby (also a pub same named at Mooregreen) Linby lived in Hucknall for quite a number of years and this pub was one of our locals. It was a pub that seemed to allways welcome you We had a nice family meal in the restrarant, and in the bar you felt as though you had gone back a little in time there used to be a large oak fire place which in winter would have logs burning in the grate. It was not a huge room but you were made to feel weicom by mine host. Outside there used to be a small play area for the children, the amusement which was only 2 fruit mac
  7. Should be a good Bonfire night phil have you got the fireworks?
  8. We’ve got four silver birch as well. It’s an arboretum here. The problem is that trees have to be managed as can be seen from the size of the impending bonfire I’ve got in the back orchard. That was burned to the ground in the early spring but is now bigger than ever and still growing. It will gradually settle but I won’t light it until next spring as I’m sure some animals overwinter in it. I’ve still got to tackle the poplars with a long pole saw to reach the higher outgrowths. I like to see a clean lower trunk. My first attempt was with an ancient hedging knife that must be considerably olde
  9. One of the big advantages of cobbled streets was that the cobbles didn't melt when you lit a bloody big fire on top of them. We always used to have our fire in the middle of the street. There was a shop "Parry's" half way down the street, and the heat of the fire used to crack their windows. We used to drop spuds into the hot coals, no aluminium foil or anything. When the outside turned black, we would peel away the burnt bits and eat the centres. Mind you anybody could buy fireworks then, even kids. I well remember one November, myself and friends bought some penny bangers and took
  10. Many years ago a friend of mine, who had a motor bodyworks, volunteered to light the village bonfire. He liberally poured lots of used paint thinners onto the heap and lit it whereupon there was a loud bang and he lost his eyebrows! I was in the pub in the next village at the time and I heard the explosion over the fields.
  11. The Lifers long term prison and Lewes Bonfire Society. Oh, and a Tesco AND Aldi. X
  12. Thanks for all the kind birthday greetings y'all. Yes had a crunchy. Mrs. L bought me box of chocolates and keeps the crunchies stocked up in the kitchen with me dog biscuits. I never mention birthdays anymore gerrin' too owd. Always got fireworks when I were a pup. Easy cheap gift I guess. Hope y'all had a fun bonfire night.
  13. Had me first Christmas Dinner yesterday, courtesy of Chailey Bonfire Society, (don't ask, it's a Sussex thing). Prepared and delivered by our local hostelry, down the road. Very nice but that'll do me for this year.
  14. Miners Welfare in Jacksdale still there, now called The Dale club still get acts on, but at the back they have a large field used for football for younsters, November they had a large bonfire with all the food and fireworks, so this is one thats still alive and kicking. Still going strong is Heanor Miners Wellfare which often have charity nights, mostley for air ambulance and most important they still have a usable bowling green, also they have a separate room for funtions. If there is a wedding, Brithday party, and lots of other use's. The sterward and sterwardess and secrtary do most of
  15. ..... and then there’s the disposal of the box. I usually set fire to these in the back orchard on our bonfire site but you might draw attention to yourselves if you do that in your close!
  16. It's surprisingly quiet here to say it's bonfire night.
  17. Bonfire night needs the following requisites... Brandy snap, Jacket taters, Bonfire toffee, Toffee apples, Compulsory Mushy Peas.
  18. We still miss our little Jack so much, even after over a year, but it’s so much easier to listen to all the fireworks being let off for Halloween, Diwali, Bonfire Night and now on random occasions up until some time in early January 2022. I have a confession though ….. friends were here earlier this evening and I’d found a small box of fireworks that we’d had in a cupboard for many years so we all went into the garden and let them off. Nothing special and rather disappointing but they brought back memories of being kids, before fireworks were ridiculously spectacular and noisy. Wish we’d ha
  19. I wish I hadn’t ceremoniously chucked my walking stick on the bonfire after my successful hip operation!
  20. So! Did ya'll set off your fireworks yet?. Morning here, so you probably haven't started yet. This has probably been gone over before, but did you enjoy bonfire night as a kid? I always enjoyed it, don't remember any injuries back in the fifties, though I'm sure they happened. Biggest thing that bugs me now is that my birthday is on the third so all the relatives bought me fireworks. Always felt ripped off as they would have bought me fireworks anyway. :-). Guess I'll die bitter and twisted. :-)
  21. I’m still tempted to let my flares off but I missed out on bonfire night and new year. I’ve since found another pack. I just have the vision of the Humber lifeboat coming up the Trent!
  22. I’ve just checked and discovered healthcare waste is not accepted at disposal sites but should be taken to a surgery. We’re going round in circles here. I still have a couple of boxes of outdated marine distress flares to dispose of. You can imagine the consternation it would cause if I took them to a police or fire station. I think I’ll leave them in a bucket of water fro a few weeks and then chuck them on my bonfire.
  23. I’m as guilty as anyone about fireworks. When the children were younger a couple of friends and I used to organise a village bonfire and firework display in the field behind the pub. We provided all the fireworks and didn’t charge admission. We had a charity collection. We still used to get moans from the freeloaders that it wasn’t spectacular enough so we packed it in. None of the moaners took it on! It does seem that fireworks today is all about loud exploding rockets, which are intensely annoying and very disturbing to animals. I’m all for banning the sale of fireworks to the public and for
  24. I'm hoping that since there are no organised displays this year, last night was it for the firework merchants. There were certainly a lot more home fireworks in my neck of the woods last night since the two local venues where organised displays are held were closed. It was foggy this morning and the added smog from the fireworks hanging in the air made it worse. As children, it was always just 5th November then it was over. Like everything else nowadays, it's become a weeks-long event. My cats are in before dark anyway and they didn't seem too bothered by the noises but several
  25. I went fishing to our club's nearest trout lake today and was surprised to see so much traffic? This evening I had a bonfire all to myself. Should have been for great Grandchildren next door but sadly they were not allowed to share the garden. They could see it from their bedroom though, so maybe something to remember.
