  1. My parents were married at the church of St Peter, Old Radford. I've heard my father joke about throwing a brick through the window. Well. I think he was joking....
  2. There was a Shipstones beer off on the corner of Glentworth Road Radford very near where I lived. I’d occasionally be sent for a bottle of IPA if one of my Aunts was visiting. When you entered there was a mirror positioned in the doorway to the back room and you’d see the shop keepers face glance at you who would be seated in the back room with the tv on. She was very elderly and quite frail. You would have to wait until the adverts came on before she’d shuffle into the shop and serve you. The Shipstones horses used to deliver the beer on their horse drawn drays. A source of excitement and com
  3. The list posted above was cut and pasted from my spreadsheet, it needs updating and I will add corrections. However, at least one of them has a Nottingham connection, Arthur Holden, of 4 Gadd Street, Radford, Nottingham. He is buried in the Nottingham General Cemetery. 265895 Sgt Holden. Arthur. 2/7th Notts & Derby Regt. Died 04/06/1920. Nottingham General Cemetery. Group Photograph
  4. Does anybody have a photo of the former butcher's shop on the corner of Norton Street & Byfield Street, no 151? That was my great-grandfather's house and I remember visiting my gt-grandma, who still lived there until just before she died, aged 97, in the early 80s. The house was entered, from Byfield Street, through a back yard with the outside toilet on one side, and the back door into the tiny kitchen on the other. There was only one water tap, no plumbed-in hot water system. For all the time I remember visiting there, she lived in just the one room. There was a door down to the co
  5. Nobody said it were a new joke @MRS B.,it were the only one I could think of at the time. Hope I've not gone down in your estimation. Between 1957 and 1965, when walking down Kennington Road, I always used to think that looking at the bond building always reminded me of a great, grey prison. It overshadowed everything around it. Well it did to me, as a little lad going to Radford boulevard school.
  6. Mid-late 60's, I lived near the corner of Norton Street with Hartley Road. One corner was the chemist, (I was in the next house on Norton street after the alleyway that ran up to the next road), opposite was a shop owned by an asian family that was an Anorak Factory ( :D Honest!, Remember that blue quilted nylon). But for that shop, there may have been no Trainspotters? On the other corner was Barratts Sweet Factory. and on the 4th corner was some waste land with a big house, which I was informed used to be a childrens home? Later that Land was built on. Clifford Court? and other blocks of l
  7. Haven't seen Radford Red in quite a while. Hope he's ok.
  8. I remember Duddoos; and I thought the word was embarrassing even when I was a kid; likewise Tegs. My grandma in Radford always said Coursey for pavement; I never heard anyone else use it. With frozen jubblies you'd suck the flavour out of them and then be left with a lump of ice. I could never actually eat one in the normal way.
  9. I remember having to go to bed well before it was dark on summer nights in my childhood. I also remember standing on the window sill and seeing the winding wheel of Radford Pit in the distance. I must have been very young then. After tea, usually on Saturdays or Sundays, we'd walk to The Arboretum and, on one occasion, got caught in a terrific thunderstorm. My father was wearing a brand new Harris Tweed jacket which got soaked and was never the same again afterwards. Life was very different in those far off days, which now don't seem so far off.
  10. Exactly..when I first joined, comfortable musically...great to take virtual braincell tour! Must confess gave me a headache Different approach..beer Goggle's, only know this area though a mate who went to the same London school as me. he went to Nottingham University.. My Grandparents Nottingham through & through... Back to topic.. fleeting memories, out of the plainsman, first right down a hill, on the left a small entrance to a park... A substantial building on the left!!!! council???? (Third time) the fenced off area I initially thought electri
  11. Allus thought that were Ilkeston road/Radford boulevard. The 4 nations...Education, Damnation,(Pawnshop),Ruination and Salvation. School, pawnshop, pub and church.
  12. For no reason other than I can, here's a list of the pubs within a short distance of Bentinck Road. It's not definitive. There's more the further out you go. Radford Rd / Claypole Road - The Langham Radford Rd / Hyson Street - The New Inn Birkin Avenue - The Albany Alfreton Rd / Palin Street - The Clarence Alfreton Rd / Bentinck Rd - Alma Inn Gadd Street - Forest Grove Inn Ortzen Street - Marquis of Waterford Alfreton Rd - Spread Eagle Alfreton Rd - Windmill Independent Street - The Forest Lion Hartley Road - Col Burnaby
  13. Help please! I hope I am not imagining this. I was born in 1951, I lived on Independent Street and went to Douglas Road school. I remember walking home and cutting through what must have been Radford mill. I walked up Garden Street then went left into a factory area. I walked through and came out on Norton Street. Now here’s where I am struggling, I vividly remember seeing small boats floating in a small pool on the right hand side as I walked through. Was there some sort of boat repairer there? My brother who is 3 years older than me thinks I am making it up, I can’t find anything about it so
  14. Ive been looking at the section of the forum about areas of Nottingham. Could I request that Hyson Green is added to it? Either as part of the Radford section or one of its own? Hyson Green was where I grew up so anything to do with Hyson Green is appreciated.
  15. This may be the one you'd found; described as Adams Cottages from Adams Street - with Lindsay Street in the distance. https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library/image-details/poster/ntgm001020/posterid/ntgm001020.html Lindsay Street is marked here; the road on the left is Radford Road, and St Paul's church is still there. The narrow road between Lindsay Street and Forest Street is Adams Street, but not named on here.
  16. Friesland, Old Radford, is mentioned in a newspaper article of 1840. Have managed to establish that Radford Grove Lane, which still exists, was in Friesland. Prospect Place was also classed as being in Friesland. Any idea of the exact area of Friesland, please? Going away in a couple of hours for a few days, so if any replies, don't think I'm ignoring you! Thanks
  17. I'm digging into early football in Nottingham. Notts Olympic were a Radford based club, active from 1884 to 1892, then reformed to play again until 1914. Their ground throughout was Churchville Ground, Churchfield Lane, which opened in 1884, in use until 1915, somewhere near St Peter’s Church,Radford. I have been unable to identify exactly where this ground was. The Nottm Journal of 20.8.1884 says “at Friesland” but the ground was generally known as Churchville. The possibilities, running up from the south are as follows. Close to St Peter’ Church, in what is now part of the graveyard. I pace
  18. C.T, your link above just echo's what I've thought for ages. Moving along Lenton boulevard with Google, I was looking for Cottesmore school, but it's not there !! Just another load of houses. Totally unrecognisable, but at least Raleigh office block is still there, as is the library. Ashburnham avenue I've walked up thousands of times, sometimes taking a shortcut through Radford rec.to Ilkeston Road. I realise a lot of buildings don't change, but I'm afraid of a massive culture shock next visit.
  19. Before that though, wasn't it where Chettles yard was? Where Skills garage is/was ,just past is where the little road that went to Radford colliery. I think it's called New Road now. (I used to take that route and over the railway bridge as a short cut to Ainsley estate).
  20. Thanks for the pictures C.T., but I have no recognition of this area, despite trying to recall the streets. Do you suppose there could be an old map somewhere? I find it most intriguing, even though the post was nothing to do with me. Thing is, whenever I read about Radford, Denman Street and area, I go into memory mode and try to recall past events.
  21. I knew I'd find something eventually. A collection of photos including one showing Hague Terrace off Hague Street, Radford. https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library.html?keywords=hague&showall=1#PN-NTGM000580
  22. Hague Terrace was in the Meadows.....but based on what Blakey has now said, I've looked a bit further afield. There was a Hague Street in Radford, running between Bramcote Street and Ilkeston Road (not far from St Peter's Street). And there might've been a Hague Terrace there....but I can't prove it yet.
  23. Hague Terrace was in Radford near Denman Street - i think - i was only 4
  24. Don't think this has been mentioned before. Radford Road, Hyson Green.
  25. I didn't like them at all and lots of places had them: Roughton's, Derby Road, Farmer's on Exchange Walk and Beech's on Radford Road. Staddon's also had one.
