  1. I've learned to be wary of hairdressers. The best hairdresser I've ever met was Howard Hutchings whose family had a salon on Radford Boulevard, near Grimston Road. His mum owned the salon but Howard and his sister also worked there. Many male hairdressers are a bit limp wristed but not Howard. Swore like a trooper and was very macho but he is the only hairdresser I've ever met who could style very long hair. Brilliant stylist. His dog, Scobie, used to sit under one of the hairdryers and would run to greet each new client as they came in!
  2. Another bit of Bulwell stone that I remember from my childhood. Though not Bestwood, but Radford, at the bottom of Denton Street where I lived until 1957. The green area on the right is the grounds of Christ Church. I can very vaguely remember the two council house being built. Melissa.J will know these two. I used to scramble along that dividing wall as a kid. B.
  3. I believe Peter Bowles lived in St Paul's Avenue, off Radford Road. That would put him in the catchment area of Berridge. Unlike the recently mentioned Pleasant Row which runs parallel to St Paul's Avenue on the other side of the former St Paul's church, many of the houses in St Paul's Avenue have survived but have been updated since his time living there.
  4. Pleasant Row was near to St Paul's church on Radford Road. The church was turned into flats many years ago. Shame, as it's a nice building with an interesting history. There were several Pleasant Row families with children at Berridge. My father was apprenticed to a man named Alf Sheen who was born in Pleasant Row, although that would be before Gary's time.
  5. This photo recently appeared in another thread, but its natural home should be here. It's the junction of Alfreton Road-Radford Blvd-Gregory Blvd. The garage is named Westbourne; and on the far right of the photo a lady is about to cross Grimston Road; that could just possibly be my grandma who lived up there.
  6. I discussed this photo which appeared on Fb a couple of months ago with Jill and she reminded me of it last night. I shows Gregory Boulevard to the left, Alfreton Road straight on and Radford Boulevard to the right. The lamppost will be at the bottom of Berridge Road. The roundabout and triangle shown. Not sure of the date but I don’t recall the building in the centre so guess it’s very early or pre 1950’s.
  7. When would that be Alpha? The only reason I ask is, that I don't recall any traffic island at the bottom of Alfreton road / Radford boulevard junction. Gregory boulevard seemed to veer off to the left, when heading towards town. Of course, I could be wrong, ( I usually am !). As an ex bus driver in 1964, I could use that route as many as 10 times a day.
  8. I remember the Pea-Souper’s in the early 60’s. Driving cautiously down Alfreton Road by keeping close to the kerb as my only visual reference point, I managed eventually to reach the Alfreton Road and Radford Boulevard Junction. At that point, I thought I was still on Alfreton Road by the bus stop and the row of shops, opposite the Le Grand pub. It turned out, however, that I had gone around the roundabout and was now travelling up Gregory Boulevard totally disoriented and had to re-negotiate the roundabout again! Fortunately, unlike today, kerb-side parking was minimal then and I wa
  9. Had this site mentioned to me yesterday and was very interested to see 2 of the groups that I not only hang with but helped to form both being referred to together with a load of other bands and clubs that I had dealings with before moving away from the area for many years. Grew up in Hyson Green although got scholarship to Nottingham High before going on to Uni. When I began teaching at Claremont in 1958 had just started singing with a close harmony group called the Melodinos ,run by a guy from Eastwood called Malcolm Walters. However,a bunch of lads at the school started messing
  10. Come on over and learn yous guys dont forget your thermal underwear its a bit cooler than Radford.
  11. I think accents has been discussed here previously. Accents and little sayings used to be very local. Radford was different from other districts that were quite close. My grandfather from Daybrooke had a quite distinct accent. Eastwood too was and still is different. We’d say alright ME duck. whereas I still hear MY duck there. Now though it’s all very different init fam. LizzieM. I tend to say Barth not bath but I don’t know why. Certainly not posh.
  12. Well I was born and lived in Radford until I was 16. The posh bit mind. I’ve never heard the expression m’ont. First I’ve seen of it is here on these posts. Worked in Mucky Huckna too. Plenty of accents and saying from the miners from all over the uk but never heard it there either.
  13. Where I were brought up in Radford, they hadn't spoken English for years. It were pure unadulterated Nottinghamese.
  14. You lot weren’t quick enough, you will notice that I gave Radford Alan’s post a ‘like’ and that was to appreciate an interesting ‘ramble’ of his childhood. Hope he can recover his story for others to read.

  16. No, I wasn't. What a great project. Glad to see that the map confirms what I worked out from the stuff I knew was available on-line (position of the house numbers). The aerial photo is very interesting, as is the directory entry (I think the City Library & Bromley House both have these directories, but current circumstances mean I wont be in either for a while). @mary1947: I think the directory listing might be a bit confusing: the street names are crossing streets and should have their own entries of addresses elsewhere (like this one for Manning Grove). Also it g
  17. Interesting to me is that Ben's pic of the old Boowul Marsden's shows a street sign on the wall which says 'Market Side'. I don't remember ever seeing that sign though it is clearly old. I never heard the expression 'Market Side'. There is a similar one visible on the left hand wall of the old Horse and Jockey in Kev's pic. I suppose it is possible its the very same one..moved when the old H&J was demolished. As an aside, my Uncle Frank Radford kept the 'New' Horse and Jockey at some point in the late 1950s. He was my Dad's sister's husband. Incidentally 'Chadbunds' mea
  18. Yes, Beekay. There were others I haven't mentioned but they ran from Radford Boulevard to Churchfield Lane.
  19. Forgive an ignoramus Jill, but would that be the whole row of shops between Radford blvd and Church field Lane, opposite Berridge Rd.?

  21. Purely a guess, looking at the buildings in the background, somewhere Radford/Hyson Green/Forest Fields ?
  22. My wife tells me that a lad who lived on her road, a little younger than her so born about 1958 drowned at Hoveringham in the 60’s. His name was Vaughn but she doesn’t recall the surname. What or how he came to be at Hoveringham we don’t know as it’s a fair trek from Radford.
  23. Photo page 60 1977 Radford rd Hyson Green. If you make photo larger you can see a salon "Michael Allen" this was one salon that I worked at. Just a bit of info Micheal was married to Aurdrey and all his 8 salon's which he owned was named Aurdrey's but at 32 she had a brain tumor and she did not survive. He then changed the name to Micheal Allen. Still one salon is being used it is in Wollaton. The wholesalers called Rendezous allso belonged to the Allen family. If I remember correctly the salon on Radford Rd/Berkin Ave was his first salon and he went on from there.
  24. Bilborough Shirley, thanks for your prompt reply. Your dad's school could have been this one (see attached pic). Cottesmore school is/was on the boulevard opposite Raleigh offices. If you turn right, off Ilkeston Road at Radford boulevard school, Cottesmore is a out 200/300 yards on the left. I've no idea what the schools are called or used for nowadays. I suspect from what you've told me, that dad's school is the Lenton one. It's the only one on that road.
  25. Bilborough Shirley, you say your dad went to secondary school on Lenton boulevard, would that be Cottesmore school. I went to Radford boulevard until end of '58. We used to have to walk to Cottesmore as we had some classrooms there. Also our school dinners were taken in a dining room there, along with the kitchen, (my mum worked in there for a while). Greetings for a Happy New Year. B.
