  1. The terraced house in Radford where I was born and lived the first 16 years had fireplaces in all the rooms, upstairs and down with the exception of my bedroom which had been the upstairs bathroom but the bath was moved downstairs to the pantry and the ‘bathroom’ became my bedroom. The only fireplace ever used was the main living room other than there was a fire lit in my sisters bedroom when she was very ill with German measles. I can still remember 60 years later how odd it was to walk in a bedroom in winter and it being lovely and warm. I regularly had to use a finger nail to scrape the fro
  2. I see turning into Radford road , there is the shipstones brewery , is it still manufacturing beer ?
  3. Thanks bk thats a long way to bring coal, & thanks phil m look forward to any more info you supply, has brought back another memory from my childhood in radford.
  4. Thanks for the reply ct, at the time i only knew of the radford premises so it's interesting to learn that maybe the same family operated in other area's & am very surprised to hear they are still going too.
  5. If anyone else is interested, this is the photo in question. https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library/image-details/poster/ntgm013850/posterid/ntgm013850.html I'm not sure how far the Nevin empire reached over the area. The vehicles which operated in Clifton were labelled A & V Nevin, and I know some of the family lived in Wilford village. There's no reason why the Radford branch shouldn't be related, although I'd never previously heard of them operating in that area. Later generations of the family occasionally crop up on FB Groups connected with C
  6. It appears that wicksteed are still manufacturing playground equipment today, we took our grandkids to our local play park in hilton derbyshire earlier this week where they have just installed a lot of new stuff all bearing the wicksteed name, i did take a photo but have no idea how to post it. And i also remember the large slide on radford rec at the corner of ilkeston rd & lenton boulevard had that name on each step.
  7. was old engine cottages or engine town off Radford bridge road down the side of the railway line andy. your grandparents may know

      Bubblewrap

The cottages you refer to Vine Street, Gate  Street & Leivers Street were built in 1874 to house miners at Wollaton Colliery.
Both my mothers parents were born on Gate Street in 1887,
      My Grandfather Walter Clifton
             Grandmother Elizabeth Radford
Grandfather worked at Wollaton colliery all his working life

  8. As you were all so very helpful with information when my other half, hey arnold, posted a query about dob park place a couple of days ago i would like to kindly ask if any of you could help to locate somewhere for me. I was born in the early 60's in my grandparents house in adcocks yard, which i know was on russell street radford, as this info is on my birth certificate. I would really love to know where on the street the yard was. I have had a look through the radford map pages on the site but no joy there, the houses were demolished in the late 60's. Thanks in advance for any info.
  9. And the 71. All went along Highbury Road, Vernon Road, Radford Road, Bentick Road, Alfreton Road, Canning Circus and beyond. Also the 42 to/from Northern Baths, same route. If memory serves correctly: 43 to Trent Bridge, 42 to City, 44 and 71 to Colwick Road. At the Bulwell end, 42 to the baths, 43 to the Market, 44 to Bulwell Hall and 71 to Rise Park.
  10. Firstly thankyou to all of the members for the warm welcome & for taking the time to read & reply to my posts, thought that i should give you all a bit more info about myself. Born 1963 at adcocks yard, russell st, radford which was my grandparents home where my parents lived with them after marrying, then moved to gamble st in 1965 when they got their own house after my younger sister was born, started school at raleigh st infants in 1968 & then windley juniors in 1970 1st at the old building then moving to the new building after a couple of years, In sept
  11. Just going through family tree and came across the site and pictures. My grandfather emigrated alone to Australia around 1915, a coal miner born in Mansfield. I have family letters and postcards from his mother in Clapham road Radford, a sister in Aspley Gardens and photos before 1932. I have a lot of family tree, but nothing of younger generations, or stories of his folk back home. Any stories, memories, links would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Both my wife and myself have been following the site for quite some time, she's a Radford girl I'm from Arnold, but not as yet contributed. How do we register?
  13. Hey Arnold, welcome to N.S. How did you manage to post without signing in? If I remember correctly, you just click on 'sign up' ,give yourself an identifying name, also email address and password. (As you can see, mine is Beekay)..I've no doubt some knowledgeable person will explain it better than me. Whereabouts in Radford did your missus originate? B.
  14. I thought this might interest Beekay, among others. This photo dates from around 1952. There are names provided but it isn't very clear which girls they apply to. I would also treat spellings with a certain amount of caution. I reproduce what was given, below: Teacher- Gertrude Barber, though there seems to be some doubt over this. Class 1A Janice Sawdon - row 2, tall girl in dark clothing. Barbara Radford - row 2, 2nd left. Top row- Val Lees, ?, Carlene Harmer, ?, ?, Audrey Hunt, Yvonne Cheatle, Anne Smith, Veronica Wilkinson (Vicky).
  15. This photo has come via Jill S, borrowed from a Facebook Group for Radford. It's Radford Boulevard School, Mrs Brown's class, in 1952....who appear to be all girls.
  16. There was a great collection on here a few years ago, Have they been removed or have i overlooked the thread, would like to view them again,
  17. I seem to remember fishing in a disused canal near Radford Bridge/bottom of Ilkeston Rd. The only thing that looks like the remains of a canal are on the north boundary of the Uni campus. Does anyone remember this or have any maps of 50' Radford area?
  18. My mates the Radford brothers chris and Rob put me on a bus at bulwell market drunk as a skunk , and yelled to the driver " mek sure he gets home ,drop him at grindon crescent , as if it was a uber driver, I was so drunk when the pushed me on the entrance door of the bus , i immediately staggered out the exit door and stood at the side of them, They looked up at the top deck and heard them say " where is the prat can't see him" I said wheyeyyyy and nearly fell over , the put me back on the bus , and i fell asleep , Next thing i heard the driver "come on time to get off m
  19. Jill, the building itself is still there but looks likes it's been unused for ages. The structure has been discussed before on this forum. I've seen pictures of inside on here. I have asked Mr.Google before, as to whether there is anything about the school. There did used to be a 'Radford Old Scholars Association ', but I think this may have fizzled out. In the few years I've been on here, I've never found anyone who went there. However, I do remember quite a few names. So if any of you out there remember "Kingy ".
  20. I don't know whether Radford Boulevard school is still in existence, Beekay, but if it is, all you have to do is ask. They are normally very keen to show former pupils around.
  21. Thank you. I often wish Radford Boulevard school did the same sort of thing. Perhaps it's because I left in 1958, that for me, it's just a pipe dream. Many thanks Jill. B.
  22. Glovers Oil and Grease Ltd. St. Peter's Street Radford. see Nottingham Live, 58 pictures of life in Radford. 2nd pic. also refers to soaps and disinfectant. Jeremy married Shelagh Shipman who worked for Cripps on Triumph Road.
  23. The film is a great reminder of how Nottingham looked in the early 60s. Think of this thread as a shortened version of the film; a few shots of various locations which should bring back memories and nostalgia. (and saves you having to watch the whole film). Looking up Derby Road towards Canning Circus with the Borlase across the top. Looking down Derby Road towards Chapel Bar. Looking up Angel Row towards Chapel Bar; the bottom of Market Street is to the right of the bus, and to the left of the bus you can see the name "Odeon" spelt vertically. The
  24. Ya shoulda gone to Radford boulevard little sis ! It were, "survival of the fittest".
  25. David, I lived in Bulwell during the 70s. I didn't go to AWD but some of my younger siblings did. I knew Rob Radford; he used to drink in the Oxford in later years. He died in 2019. As for the Mee family, could it have been June, Malcolm, Melvyn, Paul, Karl, Denise, Karen and Mark?
