  1. I love the way you say 'I too am not getting into a political argument' after just having posted a huge political rant.

  2. I don't condone illegal behavior, but otherwise I'm struggling to deal with some of the huge generalisations and mass condemnations in this thread. Most benefits in terms of total cost, go to either pensioners ( though I disagree that the State Pension is a 'benefit', it's an entitlement, which we all paid for over up to 50 years.) or to people who are working, or sick and disabled. So.. why are working people getting so much in benefits? Work it out.. it's not rocket science.... OK, I'll give you a clue. If employers won't pay proper wages, we'll introduce assorted '

  4. nonnaB, be very careful!!!!! Remember my experience with the hornet sting related elsewhere on these pages? Get some professional advice without delay. Ignore Jack and Jill vinegar and brown paper style home remedies. Reactions like you're experiencing could well be an indicator of hypersensitivity (allergy) to that and other stings. Since my experience with the hornet, my constant summertime companions are an epinephrine (adrenaline) auto-injector and a supply of chlorphenamine tablets. The local pharmacie also keeps a stock of chlorphenamine injection for me, not being within a rea

  7. Said it before, I'll say it again. Tax evasion is illegal. Tax avoidance you can bet your life I do. Does anyone ever willingly pay more than they need to? The taxes I pay make my eyes bleed and I'll take every legal avenue I can to avoid paying more than necessary. I'm not always sucessful though I've just had a £600 refund so the accountant is due a visit. I agree not all on benefits are 'bad uns' it's just those that are abusing the system are more noticable and therefore make better copy for the media.

  8. I recall the Hyson Green flats with mixed memories. Used to play there as a kid, so knew most of it. Come the early 80s, when there were riots, disturbances or just general messing about, I was a policeman. I was stationed at that time in Worksop. Bearing in mind that my parents lived in Bobbers Mill Road at the time. The senior officer's idea was that officers from Bassetlaw were not going to be known in Hyson Green were they? My role was "keyholder" ie I carried a sledgehammer. I very clearly recall chasing a group of youths up the ramp shown in one of the previous photos, and

  9. I can totally confirm that the works identified as Berridge Road works are the ones which were part of Smith Dennis. I know both factories well, as my father worked at both. The Berridge Road metalworking factory was certainly still in operation until the early 1970s. The one on Berridge Road was a general purpose metalworking factory, which not only produced sheet metal, but turned metal products too, which supported the heavy casting plant on the other side of Lambert Street and fronted onto Bobbers Mill Road. The big castings were valves for the oil industry but the fine metal

  11. Hmmm... I don't think I imagined it. I remember the Kong Nam well. I sat at the bay window table numerous times. The Shing Fat was proud of it Cantonese Cuisine - so much so it was on the name board. It was quite posh - all done in cinnabar red and gilt. It was a bit further up than the Kong Nam. Date 1974 - 78 period.

  13. Bee stings have to be removed, they only sting once and leave the sting and part of the body behind, wasps sting many times. We have the hornets, and jeeze it's like a red hot needle for several minutes. Never tried this with bee or wasp stings, but for mosquito bites, use a hot spoon,as hot as you can bear, rub the back of the spoon on the bite, it does work, itch stops and the swelling goes down right away.

  14. Probably a little late now nonna but ice and vingegar or pure lemon juice will help with wasp stings. Bee stings are acidic so need alkaline but wasp stings are the opposite and need acidic solutions.

  15. Not very cheerful this morning I'm afraid. Been awake most of the night and finally got up at 6 am. Last week I was stung by a wasp. I was sweeping outside and it made a beeline for me. I thought there was a nest nearby so I quickly got out of the way. Put some aloe vera gel and lavender oil on and the pain went straightaway. ( gotya you bugger you cant harm me) huh a couple of days later the pain came back with a swelling so bad that I had never realised that a sting could be so potent. This was on my wrist and the swelling circled my arm. The other day in exactly the same area outside

  18. I've had a look at the old maps site and it looks like Berridge road continued further in 1955 and didn't end a Lambeth street. There are two Engineering factories on it one that made oil field equipment and one sheet metal works. Assuming if you made ailerons you would work sheet metal that must be the one. Using google street view it looks like the building is still up and is now the Bobbersmill Community centre. The windows have changed but the brick stantions and wall vents are all still there. Awesome. I've uploaded a pic for you to compare http://www.vickersvaliant.com/berridge.htm
