  1. An interesting spectacle in the very clear twilight sky these evenings. A glorious new crescent moon in formation with a bright Venus. Venus gaining elongation in the solar system throughout the coming months. Years ago in the Broads I witnessed a display of the Milky way arching from horizon to horizon. There was no light pollution at the time and no mist, just a crystal clear sky. When these things are clearly visible I always take time to immerse for a while in something different from the daily grind. Man may come and go but the stars (and their subordinates) go on and on in their ow

  3. It's said of smells, what helps sell a house is the smell of fresh brewed coffee or freshly baked bread. I realise it's not window dressing but when I belonged to Tonbridge model engineering society I loved the smell of oil and coal smoke from the 5" gauge steam engines. Very evocative of days gone. B.

  4. Just been for a swim. Did the walking about in the water first, as advised by physio, then 20 lengths of crawl and a bit of floating about to 'warm down'. Always feel better for it.

  10. Supermarkets are fine for getting everything in one place but they cannot match the charisma that the old corner shops had. The unique smell in each one, a face behind the counter that you knew and no grumpy cashiers that couldn't give a monkeys about politeness and service.

  11. Almost all the shops on all the estates look like that these days. I remember those at Clifton when all the units were occupied, and with a deliberate mix of butcher, newsagent, grocer, hardware, etc etc.

  14. I loved going into the local CO-OP with mum. The smell of the ground coffee, the different sorts of cheeses, the smoked meats and the earthy smell of vegetables, many still with the soil on them. The cobblers was another shop I liked going into. the smell of the leather and the shoe polish that he used. Not to mention the tobacconists with the smell of different sorts of tobacco and cigars. Going into the local garage to get some plugs and points for the car, the smell of oil from the workshop next door. One smell I did not like was the smell of stale beer from the take-away sales at the

  15. Sorry David, I thought almost all of the stuff produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in "supermarionation" was a bit naff as you could often see the strings and wires. One of the Thunderbirds, I can't remember which one, when launched seemed to just flop off the launch ramp. Not for me even as a kid.

  21. County - The away top of the table clash with local rivals Chesterfield was postponed due to the state of the playing surface following severe frost. Subject to league approval it has been rescheduled for Saturday 11 February. Will County lose goal poacher Macaulay Langstaff during the transfer window? The club management say unlikely and only a sensational offer could prize him away from Meadow Lane. Stags - Their away game against The Cobblers was also postponed due to a frozen pitch. Midfielder George Lapslie has left the club to join fellow teammate Oli Hawkins at Gillingham.
