  1. This thread started as an attempt to provide a solution to a problem (threads which degenerate into chaos). It has turned into precisely what it was trying to get rid of.
  2. Bazza 123, to check you are doing the correct thing ............... when you Log In you should see a box on your screen which looks something like this. In the box where I've put XXXX you should be typing in your name Bazza 123, and then type your password in the box below. If you are using your home computer you can tick the "Remember Me" box. If you have done all those points, you shouldn't see any topics locked.
  3. Low bridge buses. They've been mentioned in a thread a while ago. I remember them from the Clifton buses which went along Wilford Lane and had to pass under the railway bridge at Wilford.
  4. Had a look at the area on Britain from Above and there's one photo which shows Garfield Road in the 1920s. The building I've marked with the red arrow is the one on the corner of these photos.
  5. With most hire places, they give you a full tank of petrol/diesel. When you return the vehicle, you have to return it with a full tank of petrol/diesel. So it will cost you the amount of fuel you used.
  6. Here's the same stretch of road from the opposite direction. Look at post #8 http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9920&hl=fords
  7. And don't forget that Picture the Past have more than a few photos of the various Alfred Streets http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?&user_keywords=alfred+street&operator=AND&town_village=&date_period=&database=&action=search&keywords=Ref_No_increment%2CDisk_No%2CLocal_Accession_No%2CMap_Reference%2CTown_Village%2CLocation%2CTitle%2CDate_of_Image%2CDate_Period%2COther%2CForm_completed_by%2CKey_Terms%2CThemes%2CKeywords%2CPhotographer%2CArtist%2CEngraver%2CPublisher%2CForm_of_Acknowledgment%3BCONTAINS%3B%25alfred%25%3BAND%3BRef_No_increment%2CDisk_No%2CLoca
  8. Not open just yet, but in a couple of months.......http://www.nottinghampost.com/new-era-Malt-Cross-Nottingham-s-saloon-music-hall/story-21159511-detail/story.html
  9. Not quite, but....... http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/prisoners.htm
  10. I think the two options existed side-by-side. In the 1830s it was clearly one word.
  11. I know this is a couple of weeks after the event, but what is the source of this information? At the moment the place is "Under offer", so I'd guess its future is still being negotiated. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-for-sale/property-27608358.html Looking at Gedling Council website at Planning Applications, there doesn't seem to be anything relating to this place.
  12. I don't mind Facebook, it has its uses, but the one I absolutely cannot stand is Twitter. A totally pointless waste of space and time. I've never seen anything on it which was interesting or made me think "I'm glad I saw that, I didn't know about it". A chocolate fireguard is more useful.
  13. You don't have to talk.........just watch and listen to what everyone else is doing.
  14. I'm surprised but at least up till July 2012 it was still called that. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.967271,-1.086872,3a,75y,87.73t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s6VXIf_g1d9MZdxTF1Cotfw!2e0?hl=en
  15. Maybe this site ? http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3939&hl=cinemas&page=2 (Start at post #35)
  16. Looks interesting. Not sure if there's a technical glitch in it (or it may be me ). Clicking on the link I got the first 3 chapters with photos at various points in the text. When I click on 'Next' for chapter 4 onwards, I get text but no photos - only markers where I assume photos should be.
  17. That series is set in the 1960s, so the amount of smoking is presumably to give it authenticity. In modern dramas, it's noticeable by its absence. That's something I've noticed too. If you look at the number of people smoking while walking along in the street, the majority seem to be young-ish women.
  18. Agreed. What always surprises me is seeing how much smoking there was in film or TV from 20+ years ago; whereas now there is very little.
  19. The vikings left us quite a few other words as well. http://www.archaeology.wyjs.org.uk/vikingweb/Placename.htm
  20. carni is correct ! I'd forgotten that in some threads/forums you cannot reply to a post unless you are logged in; if you just browse as a visitor you will see some topics marked as Locked. I just logged out and found that Rudeness was locked, but I could still post in some other threads.
  21. Thanks for letting us know. A mystery solved ! It's a coincidence that the red arrow is exactly where the road turned out to be. That was the only space where I could say "this is where it might be".
  22. As far as I can see 'Rudeness' is not locked, so there shouldn't be any reason why you can't reply to it. What exactly are you seeing, and where or how is it marked 'Locked'?
  23. I've been watching it intermittently for a while. I don't think you're missing anything.
  24. Here's a wider version. I think Ashley was correct that the road going through the words Hyson Green is the equivalent of Noel Street (although I doubt it was called that in1830). The road parallel to it on the left is the equivalent of Radford Road. Note that the Forest extended westwards all the way to the junction of Alfreton Road/Bentinck Road. And poohbear dropped a hint about all the windmills on Forest Road (Mount Vernon). There are also brickworks indicated half way up Redcliffe Road.
