  1. Was your school milk kept by the radiator so it was horrible and warm by break time? Put me off milk for life, I don't drink it now. God bless Thatcher the Milk Snatcher!!
  2. Yes I do - the rubber 'spreader' used to get gunged up with the glue. Course we didn't use to sniff it in those days............
  3. Twenty four years - that's almost a quarter of a century (Maths always my good subject!), where did that go to? RIP Freddie, an absolutely brilliant performer
  4. You're so right Lizzie, if anyone wanted to invade this sceptered isle all they do is wait for a Bank Holiday with an inch of snow and we're snookered! And for good measure offer sick notes to any would be defender
  5. Isn't it weird how we all remember what we were doing 40 odd years ago, and in amazing detail, yet can get half way through a sentence and can't remember what the topic was!! It's called having a CRAFT moment - Can't Remember A F....g Thing
  6. Just the same in Stoke poohbear, at least when there's a covering of snow all the gardens look the same!! Carni we were the same here yesterday, lunchtime brilliant sunshine when I nipped out for a sandwich, chucking it down ten minutes later then dry but cold by the time I left work. Went to a friends last night, left home in a slight drizzle, glanced out of the window at 10pm and couldn't believe my eyes!! I think the shock was more to do with the forecast being right than the actual snowfall....... I live right by a bus terminus and have not heard a single bus this morning yet, there s
  7. I was in my last year at Junior School - in Burton on Trent poohbear! - and remember my sister and I having to walk up to the garage on Ashby Road (the A38) to get a gallon of paraffin for the heater. It was Christmas Eve and it was below freezing, on the way we found a two bob coin frozen to the pavement. We prised it off and spent it on a box of maltesers at one and six for mum, and split the tanner left between us. At the end of January we were given a task in English class to write a letter to someone in Africa or Australia and describe the snow. I got a gold star so I must have had
  8. There seems to be a common theme of career advisors not being up to scratch! I went to grammar school and we were expected to get A levels, go to Uni and become teachers/librarians/scientists. No mention of what if you didn't pass A levels. No guidance about the real world outside of academia. I walked out halfway through A levels after being told by one teacher that I would get 'nowhere in life' with the 8 O levels I achieved, so got a job at the Post Office and this was purely because it was part of the Civil Service and to apply you had to have at least 5 O levels (and produce the certifi
  9. I caught the Sheffield train from Long Eaton this afternoon, it was a real long train and all the carriages at the platform were First Class. A man waiting with me, wearing his medals and poppy, asked the conductor how far the train was it to the standard carriages, he took a look at him and his medals and told him to stay in First Class. Small gesture but a huge kindness to one of our veterans.
  10. Why are traffic signs so rude - they never have 'please' at the end? Where exactly is the middle of nowhere, it must be very crowded as everyone seems to go there at some point, how do they know when they reach the edge? Why does no-one seem to be on the awful lot of buses that go to 'Not In Service', where is it anyway as it doesn't seem to be on a specific route? (perhaps it's in the middle of nowhere)
  11. I remember Albert sometimes used to walk down Queens Drive - he came into our shop a couple of times. There was another chap lived in the bedsits on Queens Drive who openly dressed as a woman, I remember the long false eyelashes or 'roadsweepers'. He was a regular in our shop as mum used to let him have 'tick' and used to fascinate us kids,. I'm sure Albert had a big funeral and the procession went down St Anns Well Road?
  12. Crikey already? I've not put the sprouts on yet!! I saw advent calendars for cats and dogs in one shop - didn't know they could count never mind know about Christmas!
  13. Hello Deepdene Boy, hope you get to enjoy this site as much as I do it is indeed very addictive!! Re mushy peas with mint sauce - we used to be able to buy them in Central Market, you had them in a small bowl with a wooden fork. mmmm! Also used to be able to get cockles too. My daughter was disgusted when I mentioned it.
  14. HI Piggy and Babs - My friend Maureen worked at Bell Fruit, with her sister Babs -- they had a number of brothers and lived on Corby Road, not you by any chance?
  15. Thanks Benjamin - it could easily have been him, right period and Cozzy short for Costello? He was very skinny I recal. How sad that he got killed, spookily I was only talking about him a couple of weeks ago when chatting about great guitarists. He played it with his teeth too .
  16. Is Corporation Oaks still standing? One of my school friends lived there, I thought her house was really posh (being a Medders girl) - her parents ran a newsagents on Mansfield Rd. Being quite innocent in those days I never understood why her surname (Coughtrey) was different to the one over the shop door, realise now her mum had remarried. #28 - do you mean the Langham on oh blimey I've forgotten the road - the one running through Hyson Green to Basford. Is it Radford Road? Anyway I used to babysit for the landlady in the early 70's, there was a guy fantastic guitar player called Cozzy or si
  17. #2 I have moss stains on a wall, could I try rubbing soda crystals in do you think? I have been trying this for a few weeks - to stop the end of cucumber going soft and gungy put the portion in a glass with about an inch of water. Keeps the end lovely nd crisp
  18. Just taken a look at your facebook page, some fantastic photos on there
  19. I hated school dinners with a passion, after being forced to eat cauliflower cheese which made me very ill! The pudding I remember though was a treacle tart with cornflakes on top, it came in a huge square tin and was cut into slices and the corner pieces were the best!
  20. #3 When I registered my children I was asked if I wanted the full version (which lists mother's and father's details, occupation etc) or short version which is the same as the one shown. Well not the details obviously haha! I think when you ask for a copy theres a difference in cost - I have the full version of mine.
  21. #51 When I lived in Stapleford there was a local hill called 'Cardboard Hill' as it was used by local kids sliding down on whatever they could get their hands on - often flattened cardboard boxes from the Co-op
  22. My local Co-op had a sign up in April about St George's Day which stated it was on the 23th! When I pointed it out to the cahsier she didn't have the foggiest idea what I was on about. I have also seen the 23th recently on one of those documentaries that recall events in 'real time'.
  23. So sad to hear about Maureen O'Hara, she sounds a lovely lady Chulla! She made some wonderful films, RIP
  24. Do night workers get an extra hour's pay if they work past two o'clock? And which clock did you miss - there's always one even when you think you have it all covered?
  25. #3 Thanks so much for solving this for me - I only caught a glimpse of it but the head is definately the one of good old Queen Vic, which would fit in with the streets round the area called Queens Grove, Queensbridge Drive etc.
