Northgate New Basford
Beduth replied to Craig Strongman's topic in 'Mucky Ukna' Bull'el Baasford & Hyson Green
I’ve been a member since February 2011 and have mainly followed and contributed to the Ellis School Topic. It is only recently that I’ve had a look at other Basford related items and I’m amazed at the number of stories, places and names that I can relate to. What a shame that I wasn’t in touch with Nottstalgia 5/6 years ago. Four members in particular have been corkscrewing into my memory bank. These guys; Newbasfordlad; Ashley; Keith Dawes and Craig Strongman have put forward recollections that I could well have written myself. Let me just add a couple of additional anecdotes to these memor -

Ashley for photographs of this box go to WWW.picture the past.org and type in Western Boulevard. You will see photos of the construction of W. Boulevard and the level crossing where the two railways crossed. My dad used to call this train the 'Puffing Billy' when he was a child in the 20s. Him and his mates used to walk along the railway and pick up coal that had fallen off the trucks. I have a huge interest in all the older colliery tramways and early mines in that area.

No not NRC, Ashley. Sherwood cycling club. We used to do a 100 miler on a Sunday once in a while. Can't remember the exact route now, think it was via Buxton, but the Via Gellia and Matlock bath were part of the return route. After that, the pub!

Ashley I think the aqueduct your referring to is the Bullbridge Aqueduct demolished around 1968 when the A 38 became an upgraded feeder for the M1. Colin

Ashley, tell me that is not true, please? Put the Black Lion Hotel on Google and there are umpteen threads, all praising the pub. First one though, advertising for a new tenant. The Star Group is offering a new food package etc for the new publican! Surely they would not demolish it and put up a supermarket.

Hi Ashley, according to a map of the tram network published in a book on Nottingham City Transport, the two tracks were interlaced over Church Street bridge, and I suspect this was specifically to prevent two trams from passing on the bridge. -

Ashley and all your fellow railway buffs, I found this site while looking through sites for the mystery car. It is for the railway modeller but it would appear that it contains some interesting photos etc of the railways over the years. Anyway, for what it is worth......http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/gansg/index.htm#yards

I like your choices, Ashley (#62). When I think of Robert Shaw, I think of the swashbuckling Dan Tempest in The Buccaneers'. It was many years ago but I can still picture the scenes in my mind. It was a fantastic programme. Regarding Sophia Loren, phew, she was so sexy beautiful. She met Carlo Ponti when she was 15 and he was twenty odd years older than her. They went on to marry and the cynics said it wouldn't last. They stayed happily together for fifty years until his death. Another actor I've always liked is Rod Steiger who made some great films.

Ashley, it must have been there mid 50s for me to remember it so well. I do remember the mooring changed to just down stream of Trent Bridge but I am only 50/50 that was the Pride of the Yare. Colin

If you do a search on this site there are a number of pictures here of Chris Ashley . The thing I remember him for , was winding up Badminton players , saying it wasn't a proper sport , he got some quite vocal replies to that one . At one point when he was in between presenting jobs , he did some labouring for my dad on a building site !

Karl And The Heidelburgers Featuring Chris (The Mouth) Ashley Does anybody remember Chris "The Mouth" Ashley and his Saturday afternoon football show. He certainly lived up to his nick-name.

I was brought up on the Goons and Round the Horne - I remember as a naive nine year old asking my dad why Julian and Sandy spoke the way they did (using a few words of what I later found out was Polari), and him turning red and changing the subject. Sing Something Simple on the car radio as we came home from our regular day trips to Derbyshire - always seemed to start as we came through Ripley and Heanor. How I hated that programme! Later, as my music tastes developed beyond pop, Radio Luxemburg and Radio Caroline, a must-listen-to was Extravaganza on Radio Nottingham with John Holmes and -
Haunted House on Valley Road !
Trevor S replied to Rachel Hawker's topic in Kat's Carlton, Mapperley, Arnold & Sherwood Forum
The house on Valley Road, Sherwood is mentioned on the website below back in 2003; Posting #8. Jo of Sherwood had no responses to her posting and strangely enough, it was a Jo of Sherwood who posted a thread the day before advising that she lived in a haunted house in Perry Road! Take time to read the other postings http://www.bbc.co.uk/nottingham/have_your_say/ghost_stories.shtml Also found this link regarding paranormal sightings in Notts which has some interesting links to topics mentioned on this Forum, including the figure at the Water Tower at Kimberley, the Cavaliers seen at t
