Oztalgian 3,296
Merthy Imp Quite right Ribble - Lancashire and North West. Don't know why I typed Yorkshire, probably because I had just been looking at pictures of the Ribblehead viaduct (inspired by a railway post on viaducts on this site) which is in North Yorkshire. albert smith 803
I'm not a 'bus' person, A to B suits me fine so we did get very apprehensive when this 1931 Mercedes turned up to take us around the Western cape vinyards some years ago. The slatted wooden seats would have made life interesting on some of the bends we drove round later in the day in a very modern coach from the 'feeder' point. The worst 5 day trip we had was to Germany with a Mansfield coach firm, the driver each morning passed the road atlas to the nearest passenger & asked "where are we going today?" and even worse when he said he had no cleaning equipment for the on board toilet. Even with the door sealed with masking tape the smell was atrocious. Compensation was paid & the driver sacked! Nobody suggested 'a tip for the driver!' not a polite one I can print!
The Pianoman 1,535
The Mansfield firm must have been Redfern.

radfordred 6,284
Blimey ..... just been reading about Nottingham's pioneering investment in 13 new single decker fully all electric buses made by Chinese manufacturer BYD to add to the 45 we already have costing £3.2 million http://www.mynottinghamnews.com/new-electric-buses-power-nottinghams-clean-air-ambitions/
philmayfield 6,140
They could have bought a lot of electric buses for the price of the tram and still they wish to continue with this nonsense.
woody 552
And the electric buses can steer to get round obstructions in the road. The old trolley buses were more agile than the slug we have got now.
loppylugs 8,429
I always liked the old trolleybuses. I've forgotten now, but did they have any heating in the winter?
plantfit 7,597
If they did would it be much use with having an open back, can't remember myself if they had heating Rog
Guest
One of my memories of getting the 31 or 50 was some poor soul heading for Porchester Rd. One bloke relived the whole death railroad scenario on his journey..poor sod!
LizzieM 9,510
A friend of mine used to get on the 25 with me by Digby College and always jump off as it turned into Breckhill Road, she got away without paying her fare every time but sadly she was killed in a road accident when she was 21. Not by jumping off a moving bus though.
woody 552
I used to get the 25a from Huntingdon Street when I was at Digby college, this went the opposite way by going via Carlton. We did night school that finished at 7.15 and the bus came down Westdale Lane at 7.20 so it was one mad dash down the college drive to get to the stop in time. If you missed it the next one was at 7.40, not long to wait , but it meant that I missed the connection back in Huntingdon Street so had to wait until 8.15 for the next one. In the middle of winter waiting in the old bus stations was not the most enjoyable of pastimes. Much better when I got a car and came home over Mapperley top and got home in a third of the time. notty ash 371
Some of those West Bridgford buses look like they are from a different age by the late 1960s. You almost expect a man with a red flag to be walking in front of them
