I wear mine out of respect. Nothing more, nothing less. If folks see it as being PC, then so be it. It's something I've done since starting work. If I was homeless, and down to my last ten bob, I'd STILL buy a poppy. They died so that I could live in so called peace, and relative freedom. Simple as that !5 points

Everybody was right. Looking in old telephone directories, D & A Stationers were at 22 Lower Parliament St. And that was between the garage and the church, before Sainsbury's was built.4 points

I enjoyed working there, except when someone cut themselves on bacon slicer. They had an amazing canteen, the sandwiches had more filling than bread! I also worked for a while in a factory at Beeston putting fancy trimmings for furniture and clothes on cards. Think it was called jenning or something like that, didn’t stay long though as it made your hands sore. But I got the fringed trimming for my jeans for nothing, a must if you were a “mod”.4 points

I didn’t take your comment the wrong way Mary As for sending Christmas cards, I haven’t bought any yet but shall do so soon. I used to send over 100 but the list is slowly dwindling as people die off ...... I will always write cards and post them, despite the cost of postage stamps. I can’t abide e-cards and view folk who send them as lazy and mean, “oh, I’m not sending Christmas cards this year, I’m donating that money to Charity”. Well I do both.3 points

My father used to say it was a very effective way of thinning out the population and, in my opinion, it needs thinning out drastically. We've become parasites who are destroying our host but if you express that opinion, attack from all sides is usually the result. It's a consequence of uncontrolled breeding and increased longevity but the effect on the planet is catastrophic. Maybe dad was right!3 points

I watched it for the 2nd time on TV and it still gets to me. I saw a live streaming of the stage show last year at a cinema in Ely and found that heart wrenching too. I thought I wouldn't get beyond the wooden models but as the show went on, they became real - such talented operators...2 points

We don’t have village bonfires any more. Our parish council would go spare if there was a burnt patch on their precious Glebe Field. Years ago, when our kids and their friends were much younger, I and a bunch of fathers used to organise spectacular village bonfire events. None of the current batch of parents seem to have much go in them. They’re probably totally indoctrinated in today’s health and safety culture. Way back in 1962 we had the bonfire on our field and my father, who was very rigourous in car oil changes, had a large quantity of used sump oil which he poured over the fire on the a2 points

My Dad and Grandad both lived in council houses with large Gardens,,,both dabbled with their gardens,,but much preferred going for a pint,,......Dad was highly delighted when i turned the very large back garden into a Football pitch for me and me mates,, Mam however loved her little corner which she tended with loving care,,2 points

I mentioned this fantastic tread with Mrs Red last night over dinner, she's also never been to a garden center either! I think it's because we only had a front step & brick back yard so no need for garden centers, my Dad or Granddad would have had no time for gardening anyway, they would have been knackered after working all week & would have preferred going out for a pint? Work hard, play hard.2 points

Gone poppy mad this year picked two limited Nottingham Forest twinned enamel poppy's on Saturday only 1200 made, also a Notts County one 600 made, two paper poppy's & an iron on one for my work coat & brought me Mam a metal poppy bird feeder, she loved it x2 points

To be quite honest it bothers me not the reason people buy poppies , the most important thing is that they do buy one . The cash generated and the use it is put to is the most important thing.2 points

Fly, I think you must be Nottstalgia's biggest Garden Centre fan! You seem to have visited several dozen of them on your days out. (And I think RadfordRed ought to visit one of them just once - if only for a cup of coffee.) I think, - like Phil and TBI - that Garden Centres and other out of town retail outlets are becoming increasingly popular these days. Sad for the High Street shops and department stores, though.... Thank you for all your comments - it's been really helpful finding out what people aged 60ish - 70+ like /dislike about Garden Centres. Now I need to ask so2 points

I can't understand that logic, phil, I'd have said completely the opposite. We've been wearing poppies for nearly a 100 years, how can it be PC? More PC to stop wearing. I agree with FLY too, I've seen far fewer poppies worn this year, surprisingly the older generation seem lacking.2 points

Me neither but I wear a poppy...just an ordinary one...every year out of respect for those (members of my own family amongst them) who died in both world wars. I, personally, would never wear the glitzy versions of poppies which have become common in recent years, nor display a plastic poppy on the front of my car. Something in me isn't happy about the current rash of poppies on lampposts. Yes, it is the centenary of the end of The Great War but I don't think that's any excuse to turn the symbol into 'bling' and neither of my grandfathers would have approved of that. I believe, as2 points

It was my ambition to work on the biscuit counter in there when I was a child. I loved that biscuit counter. Can smell it now. They got rid of it. Had to go into teaching instead!2 points

I’ve spent nearly all my life typing (and still need to type daily as we’re still running a business here) and when I get an email, usually a long interesting catch-up email, I decide to answer it ‘soon’ but never get around to it. Instead I will pick up the phone and call that friend who I haven’t seen for months or years. We chat for an hour or more and I love it. Texting is ok if there is no time to talk but I much prefer to have a proper chat.2 points

I don't know if I'm imagining, as I think back but I seem to have a recollection of that shop, the window angled inwards from the left, the door set back on the right and sold artists equipment too, canvasses, easels etc which were displayed in the window?1 point

I guess I miss bonfire night as we used to celebrate it. With my birthday being on the third a lot of relatives used to buy me a box of fireworks. I was ok with that for a number of years until I began to realize that this was a cheap birthday present. Somehow or other we all seemed to manage without serous burns or parts of our anatomy being blown off.1 point

Well done Margie. As long as the kids realise the significance of the occasion. In answer to your statement, yes, I love my garden and the work I put in is rewarding and mental therapy. It's very soothing in this mad wilderness we call society.1 point

As you know, I always deeply respected Bob so what I say next is not intended to attack a good man who is not here to defend himself. If you asked Bob to define his religion he would answer, as he did to me once. "I'm a liberal Christian." Trimmed to it's basics we might translate that as, believe what you want. Jesus was a good man try to follow his teachings. A slippery slope. At that point God becomes a God of the gaps. What we can't explain by our science must be God's doing. I'm not trying to start a religious debate so don't block me. I'm just trying to explain that seeming anoma1 point

To be honest I am ashamed of the state of my sheds, they seem to be overrun with useful (to me) stuff,to the untrained eye they are full of rubbish. This is the shed I keep the trike in,just enough room for it to fit down the middle, This one is the garden equipment shed, lawn mowers (2) pressure washer (1), toolboxes with tools (2), portable gas fire (1 but there is another one stored in the front conservatory), cine projectors (2) don't know why, never used them never will, drain rods and various ends (2) fuel cans (5) golf balls (2 carrier bags full) don't know why, never playe1 point

I used to catch the 68 from the old Broad Marsh after another session at the Peoples college, in them days there were the NCT 68,South Notts to Gotham or East Leake or the WBUDC that was numbered the same as NCT,68, NCT always went down Queens Drive and over Clifton bridge while South Notts and WBUDC went down Wilford lane I think the reason was the low bridge on Wilford lane between the Chateau and Wilford village, if I missed any of those it would be the 67 which I think terminated near the Peacock pub, what we called "Big shops" Rog Edit, forgot to add some of the WBU1 point
