  1. Hey Arnold, welcome to N.S. How did you manage to post without signing in? If I remember correctly, you just click on 'sign up' ,give yourself an identifying name, also email address and password. (As you can see, mine is Beekay)..I've no doubt some knowledgeable person will explain it better than me. Whereabouts in Radford did your missus originate? B.
  2. Both my wife and myself have been following the site for quite some time, she's a Radford girl I'm from Arnold, but not as yet contributed. How do we register?
  3. I thought this might interest Beekay, among others. This photo dates from around 1952. There are names provided but it isn't very clear which girls they apply to. I would also treat spellings with a certain amount of caution. I reproduce what was given, below: Teacher- Gertrude Barber, though there seems to be some doubt over this. Class 1A Janice Sawdon - row 2, tall girl in dark clothing. Barbara Radford - row 2, 2nd left. Top row- Val Lees, ?, Carlene Harmer, ?, ?, Audrey Hunt, Yvonne Cheatle, Anne Smith, Veronica Wilkinson (Vicky).
  4. This photo has come via Jill S, borrowed from a Facebook Group for Radford. It's Radford Boulevard School, Mrs Brown's class, in 1952....who appear to be all girls.
  5. My mates the Radford brothers chris and Rob put me on a bus at bulwell market drunk as a skunk , and yelled to the driver " mek sure he gets home ,drop him at grindon crescent , as if it was a uber driver, I was so drunk when the pushed me on the entrance door of the bus , i immediately staggered out the exit door and stood at the side of them, They looked up at the top deck and heard them say " where is the prat can't see him" I said wheyeyyyy and nearly fell over , the put me back on the bus , and i fell asleep , Next thing i heard the driver "come on time to get off m
  6. Jill, the building itself is still there but looks likes it's been unused for ages. The structure has been discussed before on this forum. I've seen pictures of inside on here. I have asked Mr.Google before, as to whether there is anything about the school. There did used to be a 'Radford Old Scholars Association ', but I think this may have fizzled out. In the few years I've been on here, I've never found anyone who went there. However, I do remember quite a few names. So if any of you out there remember "Kingy ".
  7. I don't know whether Radford Boulevard school is still in existence, Beekay, but if it is, all you have to do is ask. They are normally very keen to show former pupils around.
  8. Thank you. I often wish Radford Boulevard school did the same sort of thing. Perhaps it's because I left in 1958, that for me, it's just a pipe dream. Many thanks Jill. B.
  9. Glovers Oil and Grease Ltd. St. Peter's Street Radford. see Nottingham Live, 58 pictures of life in Radford. 2nd pic. also refers to soaps and disinfectant. Jeremy married Shelagh Shipman who worked for Cripps on Triumph Road.
  10. Ya shoulda gone to Radford boulevard little sis ! It were, "survival of the fittest".
  11. David, I lived in Bulwell during the 70s. I didn't go to AWD but some of my younger siblings did. I knew Rob Radford; he used to drink in the Oxford in later years. He died in 2019. As for the Mee family, could it have been June, Malcolm, Melvyn, Paul, Karl, Denise, Karen and Mark?
  12. Does anyone remember the 360 social club on highbury vale just as your coming out of bulwell ? I wasn't a member but my mate Chris Radford used to get me in, there was a pub opposite three horse shoes , which led down to bulwell bogs or the river leen as the posh pronounce it , i worked in a stocking factory for about two week on Greasley street and sat on the steps of the bulwell bogs to eat my snap ! I fancied a girl in bulwell woolworths and was to shy to buy a record there 45s in them days so i got my brother to buy it, David essex we're gonna make you a star was the record !
  13. Remember as a kid 70,s my mate chris radford was mad on nottm forest, me having no knowledge of football went along with him , as the players were getting off the coach , chris said get as many autographs as you can , i ran up to a smart dress guy near the coach and said gizz yer autograph mate , he replied you can have it if you want i am the coach driver, i believe Mckay was the manager at the time !
  14. Thanks Engineer that's the Radfords I'm talking about , i went to school with Chris radford at alderman.w.derbyshire school 1970-74 , used to drink with chris and Rob in the pubs of bulwell horse and jockey mainly , also remember Malcolm mee , and his brother can't remember his name though might of been micheal, did you live in bulwell yourself ?
  15. There was a large Radford family in Bulwell that had Chris as the youngest (Ralph, Brian, Maureen, Paul, Steve, Rob, Dave and Chris).
  16. Hi guys interesting memories there , i am David sheridan , lived on grindon crescent bulwell hall and attended alderman.w.derbyshire school from 1970- 1974, i was an easter leaver back in 74, I remember mr foister P.E teacher bouncing a medicine ball off me head for clowning around, i remember mr Edwards we called him "Eddie " used to send a couple of boys to the shop to buy ciggies for him , mr reed , mr harrop, and mr Belshaw and mrs appleby ? Or mrs downey english teacher Of the pupils i remember Chris radford my old side kick, nigel staples, ian redgate , Michael sears and
  17. Going off topic now. I used Cliff's Streetview link to checkout the University building. It really is magnificent, I hope the students and teaching staff for that matter appreciate what a superb piece of Nottingham's heritage they now occupy. I can't resist having a good play with Streetview when it's exploring my old haunts in Nottingham. I traced my way up Waverley St to Forest Rd crossings and proceeded down Mount Hooton Rd. I made this journey several times a week when I was on day release at Trent Poly (as it was known then) to and from Russell Rd. This would be 1969-72. Th
  18. Just a thought, hope Radford Red’s travel plans haven’t come unstuck and he makes it home for his Wembley outing, with so much chaos at airports this weekend. You Redssssss!
  19. Yes Oz, remember Monkey vaguely, a character ran his finger over his lips to cast a spell? Back on topic, Radford Red posted a video of Percy ages ago, he used to play in the subway on Parliament St Saturday nights earley 90's, also Running Horse on Mondays with a mate, both lefty's and semi acoustics.. Also, Remember a chap. that busked in that subway, had aspirations of setting up a mobile burger van business.. Red, no time to slum it abroad, get back on focus mate.
  20. Seems to be a permanent queue of 40 plus outside Trenchers from 11 in the morning until closing, we went Hadley's over swing bridge, being a Radford lad I like a plate, knife & fork & dollop of tartar sauce, if you ain't got contactless payment your going to starve & die of thirst, no one taking cash.
  21. I gave some talks to several local history societies in recent years and it was suggested that I avoid using the term ‘ladies and gentlemen’ as gender assumption is a can of worms. As my audience were general older people I didn’t perceive a problem but it was given when at a ‘council’ venue and I complied. The term ‘duck’ was very common in the Radford of my youth but with the young now it seems absent. Referring to friends as ‘fam’ is common where my grandson lives in Eastwood and elsewhere I suspect. An older woman in Birds at Eastwood always serves by asking ‘now then my duck’ never ‘me du
  22. My parents (born in Lenton/Radford and lived at Clifton) always spoke to each other as 'Duck'; they never used their real names and never said 'Meduck'.
  23. On Google Maps, on Medway Street in Radford you can still see the name Pearce's Ice Cream Manufacturers painted on the roof. https://goo.gl/maps/H1EVssyvJR8BRKh2A
  24. When first married I lived in the flat above Hutchings on Radford Boulevard. It was a lovely big flat accessed by an external open staircase at the back. Scobie despite having the run of the yard used to like to do his business on the steps. It was dark and at night and it was a real nuisance.
  25. HI Jill i know Howard well also his sister Leslie. I first met Howard when he came to work at HFEC teaching hairdressing. He is one of the nicest people I know. Howard came to live in Hucknall on Poleperrway , Leslie who also taught Hairdressing lived at Nuthall. At the time we were all teaching he still had the salon on Radford Boulevard, did you know that he went half over England, to get his dog,Scobie as a pup. Have not seem him for a few years now, would love to meet him again.
