  1. I am so pleased that DJ and Brew are 'at it' again ... the balance is healthy and makes me think about the future from reflections of the past. Hope that Trogg continues to chip in with his experience from time to time too. I would like to contribute to the debate myself but I do not have the skills of the 'diverse duo'. I have a wealth of 'been there, done that' stuff to call upon but it would be too subjective for this topic. So carry on, carrying on guys

  2. Whilst sitting having a coffee and munching thru a pack of 12 snowballs (I know but it has to be done) I started pondering some of life’s mysteries. Why is my brain stuck at 18 years of age and thinks I can do things that my body knows I can’t? Where does the paper hanky come from in the washing machine when I know I checked all the pockets? Why does Kai roll over to have his belly tickled But when I have his brush in my hand he forgets how to do it? Why do my climbing plants climb anywhere but up the trellis I kindly provided for them? Why do Amazon tell you delivery in 3-5 days

  3. For my birthday I have been given an Alexa with a clock (the wonders of modern technology continue to amaze me) to go in my bedroom. I now have 3, so a) She can now ignore me in 3 rooms b) I can argue with her in 3 rooms c) She can answer questions I haven’t asked and don’t have the slightest interest in the answer in 3 rooms d) She can play the podcast she thinks I should listen to not the one I want to in 3 rooms e) She will be able to not understand something I ask for today that she understood perfectly the day before in 3 rooms I just hope this one is as o

  5. Alas I don't have that sort of phone or Alexa wotsit. I have discovered this wonderful method called paper and pencil. Both served me for well over fifty years. Admitted, I am using my tablet to create a shopping list for the purpose of online delivery slots, (only just mastered that !). These all singing, all dancing devices scare the hell outa me. All this techno talk about streaming, vlogs, blogs etc just leaves me cold. What happened to thinking? Alright, I know I'm a dinosaur, but I prefer to stay in control. By the way Alexa, put the kettle on and butter my toast soldiers.

  6. SG. You wrote about climbing plants..... when my runner beans came through and started growing their little tendrils, some of them were desperately trying to hold on to something - anything - except the canes. I caught one 'holding hands' with a nearby potato plant and another two hanging on to each other like best friends. I gently disentangled them and showed them where they needed to go and they seemed quite happy to oblige! I had a picture in my mind of their being scared little children trying to find someone to hold on to.... why am I telling you all this - I think

  7. I rarely went into the Broad Marsh Centre. I thought it was a bit shabby. I stopped using the Victoria Centre when the parking prices became silly. Since lock down I’ve discovered I can get all I want on line without having to visit these impersonal shopping malls. I’ll probably never go into Nottingham again. Not having a ‘bus service and having a long walk to the station, my only way into town is by car. Unfortunately the City Council have gone out of their way to discourage the motorist. .

  8. From my healthcare background I can tell you that this virus is far more dangerous than the flu virus. About 10 times more deadly. It really is nasty. My step son is currently on a flight to Moscow and then to St Petersburg, I have asked him to be careful.

  10. I've been watching a series of organ recitals on YT. Put on by a young Dutch organist, Gert Van Hoef. He's just turned 26. Very gifted. He's put a series of concerts together, some on his home organ some in some of the old Dutch churches. Makes an evening pass pretty quickly. He's quite fluent in English as well as Dutch. Pretty good cross section of music types.

  11. Well said, Beekay! Alexa? I talk to myself all the time. When I go to the shops, my memory tells me what I want or need to buy. I rarely forget anything. Why do I need Alexa when I have me?

  12. Better still, why not stay away altogether? Leave those places to the wild creatures whose home and habitat it is and afford them the dignity of getting on with their lives undisturbed. They don't need us, our armed guards, our cameras or our pieces of fruit. They need to be left alone.

  13. You've just repeated ( almost ) what I've been thinking. I'll add to that too , why when I go to a shop and I know what I want and can say it over and over again in my mind then when I get there I feel foolish because I can't remember the name of the product. It happened to me this afternoon, good job the assistant knew me. I was feeling a bit under the weather this morning but carried on with the cleaning I should have done yesterday. When I'd finished I felt as though I'd run a couple of marathons and then some more. I went to lie down a bit and when I got up I went to do some shopping

  16. I wasn’t ‘developing an argument’ and am surprised you choose to think I was doing that. In fact I said I wasn’t ‘having a go’. You must know by now that I rarely make any political comments at all and certainly never engage in political argument. Your political comments are usually long and well reasoned and for you sincere. I merely wanted to point out that your comment was imho inappropriate where it was (again) and why I thought that. I did say at the start of my post i was loathed to comment but where else could it go to make any sense and did ask for any response to be made on the appro

  17. Trogg.. this has been said a lot lately in the context of George Floyd, slavery, statues, etc.,etc. And of course it is true that we cannot alter the events around which History is written.. But , since History is only ever someone's interpretation of those events.. we can alter how we understand it. When young, I was taught to be proud of the British Empire. I was taught that it was a 'good thing'. I was taught that we 'brought religion, education and civilisation to 'savages'.' I was not taught that we forcibly subjugated people, interfered in thei

  18. The toll gate at Netherfield was a contentious issue for many years. Stemming from the enclosure act the road now designated Meadow Road should have been a public carriage way to the boundary with Colwick Estates owned at the time by the Musters family. However, the residents of Colwick Hall decided to charge people for right of way over their land. They erected the gate in the position photographed, unfortunately it was erected in the wrong place. It should have been erected just past where Meadow Road turns into Charworth Road. Originally, the area was known as Gedling/Colwick/Stoke Bar

  19. What on earth is this latest buzzword, 'influencer' supposed to be? I've seen it dotted about. What is an influencer? Someone who influences the feeble minded, easily led, herd animal to do what they do, wear what they wear, think what they think, mimic their speech patterns, etc? Another 'import' from the good old USA, is it? As dear old, daft as a brush, George W Bush explained, most of their imports come from abroad!

  20. I don't think the NEP employ anything that could be termed 'journalists'. I suspect they use university students (or similar) who want work experience just to get a foot in the door (and with very little - if any - payment). I look at it every day, not because I think it's good, but simply because there's very little alternative. Some of the writing and understanding of language is quite spectacular.

  21. Today is my birthday, so I am more elderly today than I was yesterday! I have been asked what I would like to do today but thinking about it there isn’t much I can do really in this covoid19 world at the moment. To be honest even if pubs, restaurants etc. were open I wouldn’t go I just wouldn’t feel safe and as I am not travelling on public transport town shopping is out. Also there doesn’t appear to be any loos open at the moment so that is something else to take into account. I can’t even take Kai out today as the heat yesterday has upset him a bit so he will be having an “in day” laying on

  23. When you think what was destroyed to build the Broad Marsh Centre! Never liked that place, even when it was new. Unfortunately, Drury Hill cannot be put back. If it had been left alone it could now have been a corner of old Nottingham to rival the Shambles in York.

  24. I voted for Thatcher and against her. I voted for Blair and against him. To blame either for whatever we may consider they did wrong is simply a generalisation and doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. Every government in history has made mistakes, future governments will be no different. Holding on to a grudge and resentment for 30 years is not only a waste of time it is likely to colour our judgement of the present and future.

  25. I completely agree with DJs comments on the CV thread including the part on Thatcher. I too was involved at that time and had to deal with the results of Thatchers policies, but time has passed and what ever we thought of her and her policies we cannot alter history. I try not to get involved in these matters now I am to old and kna******d to take part and change anything , whilst I cannot and will not forget the past whatever I do I try to concentrate on the future and hope for better for my grand children. I can understand DJs position as due to his occupation at the time he had first hand e
