  1. As Ashley mentioned, it may just be a misprint, but looking at various other maps, it changes from Street to Road around the 1920s. Or maybe that was when someone finally noticed the mistake.
  2. #23 Ashley. We always knew it as 'Northern bridge' and the station as 'Basford and Bulwell',........often went into Nottingham on the train from there 1penny long route thru Daybrook and a halfpenny on the short route thru 'New Basford.
  3. Someone mentioned the motorcycle in the Bonser factory entrance again today on a local Facebook page, and I remembered that Ashley had spoken of it here. Is this the bike Ashley? It's now at the National Motorcycle Museum. Like you said, the engine has no internal parts.
  4. Re. Ashley's quote: I didn't know whether it was a true fact or not. It was certainly always believable because of the sheer number of great looking women that were always around in Notts. One area I guess, where Nottingham isn't crap !
  5. Ashley I recall there were many dyers, bleachers and other textile firms along the Leen valley from Basford into Hyson Green and into Radford. I can recall as a child many rolls of fabric being taken from the factories alongside the Leen. I think that the soap factory (Eno's) near Wilkinson Street did some bleaching.
  6. This seems to explain the row of buildings on the map which I first thought was the one Ashley mentioned. It appears to be a row of houses or sheds/workshops ? Next to them seems to be a platform awning, and then the Health Centre/Train crew office. For anyone who isn't sure, London Road bridge is on the right.
  7. I originally posted this map to show a building I thought might be the one Ashley is referring to. It shows the Mk2 station on Station Street, and the way its entrance was at an angle to the road. This shows things by 1920s; the Mk3 station is operating and Ashely's building is marked in black - and bigger than it is now. And the one in the earlier map is still there.
  8. Ashley alerted us back in June, 2013 that the Black Lion had closed and the rumour was that a supermarket was going up on the site...... Posted 31 July 2013 - 03:33 PM .. Black Lion at Radcliffe On Trent , massive place, is shut rumour is demolition and supermarket on site? Not surprised at this latest news as I just thought it was going ahead and I checked Google every now and then but nothing new. Surprised ROT residents are shocked - perhaps they should drink at the Manvers and keep up with the news like Ashley! Trouble is, Nottingham has changed that much since the 50/60s that it is v
  9. Thanks Katyjay. Pearces wafer sandwich, absolutely beautiful. Much better than cornets; you could chase the melting icecream around the outside of the wafers and then bite into it once you were sure you wouldn't lose any. And thanks Ashley for reminding me of Padgetts shop on Monsall Street. Opposite where I lived in Chard St. was Robinsons with a similar set up. On the corner of Liddington St. and Ekowe St was Stonalls; another part of the establishment of the area. And obviously you will remember the sweet shop on the corner of Nottm. Road and Rossetta. They always had posters on their wal
  10. Thanks Ashley, an old boy near me airs his every Sunday morning. It sounds wonderful!
  11. Give us a clue Ashley. Where exactly is this glamorous location?
  12. WHICH island was the 'kamikazi one Ashley?.............yes i am within walking distance of the Tram and the other public transport still takes longer than theTram with the traffic etc. and is not so regular.
  13. Ashley The anniversaries must be very difficult. You have my sympathies.
  14. I agree with Basfordred Ashley, you've got lots of friends here for support. Easy for us to say that I know .........
  15. Think positive Ashley, you've got our lot to give you support.
  16. Come on down, Ashley.....you will never look back. Now, if you send me your bank account details and any other financial institution information, I will organise a hire van to get you to the airport...Trust me...
  17. Ashley...shout a friend a pub lunch and petrol and he might use his van?????
  18. nice one ashley, now if you want to start a topic on pub fights choose your weapon,LOL.
  19. How about a go at this fixer-upper Ariel Leader Ashley?
  20. Here's a wider version. I think Ashley was correct that the road going through the words Hyson Green is the equivalent of Noel Street (although I doubt it was called that in1830). The road parallel to it on the left is the equivalent of Radford Road. Note that the Forest extended westwards all the way to the junction of Alfreton Road/Bentinck Road. And poohbear dropped a hint about all the windmills on Forest Road (Mount Vernon). There are also brickworks indicated half way up Redcliffe Road.
  21. Hi BIGfish, Big welcome Rod. I seem to think I've had contact with you some time before on another website Rod; probably on 'F.R.' NewBasfordlad is getting Ashley cross polinated with me I believe. I know that NewBasfordlad lived down towards the bottom end of Rosetta and Ashley was at the other end on the corner of Nottingham Road. I lived in Chard Street until 1956 but I don't know of any other members from there. I left Ellis in '56 to move to Coventry. Can I suggest you look up topics for Ellis School and Northgate etc. I think you will find many references to familiar names and places
  22. Welcome BF. Born 1946 Rosetta Road, lived there to 1964. We also have a member who lived on Chard St, Ashley I think.
  23. Speaking of Sikhs ,Ashley, I visited the Golden Temple for the 1st time last year. Truly amazing! They serve 100,000 meals a day to the poor and destitute.I was asked to stay for a meal,-I must have looked pretty poor to be invited. I have a picture somewhere of me in my compulsory orange turban. A really funny thing happened whilst we were waiting to be admitted to the t Temple proper this huge Sikh came up and started jabbering to me,I could not understand him---he had the broadest Glasgow accent you ever heard.!
  24. Ashley, I think it depends on your definition of Up or Down Arnold Road. This is the embankment I was referring to
