Sorry to put it this way Ashley but that is a complete and utter load of B*****ks, yesterdays rules. That code of practice dated 1994 has been superseded and amended that many times I would be here all day typing the difference's. The major change that this concerns came about in 1998 Approved by R A Banner on the 12th October and coming into force 31st October 1998. First paragraph. These Regulations........ Require work on a gas fitting to be carried out only by a competent person blah blah blah ....are required to be a member of a class of persons approved by the HSE at the time of th

Ashley, in the Basford forum, the thread Old Roads Leadings into Old Basford, post #22 has a picture of the island, so you didn't imagine it.

The photo was taken when Grandma was in Ashley Grove Nursing Home in Worksop. I presume that place is no longer there? It used to have lovely grounds which I used to explore when visiting got a bit boring for a 7 year old

Bulwell China Street
Radford replied to Radford's topic in 'Mucky Ukna' Bull'el Baasford & Hyson Green
Thank you so much for your kind welcome, the photo of china street was amazing. I lived on Commercial road, one side was Mrs Brancroft who taught me the piano, the other side next to the back entrance and the bakery was Bess,Frank and Uncle Sam plus their Alsatian dog.Across from our house was a row of cottages with my mums friend Mrs Weedon and her son Tony. The Blueit family lived behind the back passage next to school as Mr Blueit was the caretaker. There were 3/4 houses after ours then a sweet shop and Rufford school which I a attended until 1961,Mr Thether was the head with Miss Wood,Mr Ha -
Doug himself also taught but at Cottesmore. My wife went there but it was the boys he taught. Did anyone mention Jesse Boot and also John Dane and William Ashley Player. All were real Nottingham heroes, not only providing employment for many people but also gave of their own wealth for the people of Nottingham.

Ashley, I have just been reading the posts on this thread and back in 2010 you mention Smith's scrap yard just over the bridge at Basford and you couldn't remember the son's name or I cannot find it in these postings. The son's name was Ron, he was a big lad who could look after himself. I also think his dad was also called Ron and they lived at Bestwood Park.

That's great, David, many thanks. It sounds like the location may well be Teesdales mentioned by Ray and Ashley.
-
Ashley your right Sydney Smiths though as I recall we used to call it the 'brass foundry' even if it wasn't a foundry as such. That block end where the loading bay was located was our play ground.

Northern Baths turn-around...
Cliff Ton replied to rob237's topic in Pete's Nottingham Transport Forum
As Ashley mentioned, it may just be a misprint, but looking at various other maps, it changes from Street to Road around the 1920s. Or maybe that was when someone finally noticed the mistake. -
Northern Baths turn-around...
benjamin1945 replied to rob237's topic in Pete's Nottingham Transport Forum
#23 Ashley. We always knew it as 'Northern bridge' and the station as 'Basford and Bulwell',........often went into Nottingham on the train from there 1penny long route thru Daybrook and a halfpenny on the short route thru 'New Basford. -
Re. Ashley's quote: I didn't know whether it was a true fact or not. It was certainly always believable because of the sheer number of great looking women that were always around in Notts. One area I guess, where Nottingham isn't crap !

Ashley I recall there were many dyers, bleachers and other textile firms along the Leen valley from Basford into Hyson Green and into Radford. I can recall as a child many rolls of fabric being taken from the factories alongside the Leen. I think that the soap factory (Eno's) near Wilkinson Street did some bleaching.

Nottingham's first railway station
Cliff Ton replied to Cliff Ton's topic in Pete's Nottingham Transport Forum
This seems to explain the row of buildings on the map which I first thought was the one Ashley mentioned. It appears to be a row of houses or sheds/workshops ? Next to them seems to be a platform awning, and then the Health Centre/Train crew office. For anyone who isn't sure, London Road bridge is on the right. -
Nottingham's first railway station
Cliff Ton replied to Cliff Ton's topic in Pete's Nottingham Transport Forum
I originally posted this map to show a building I thought might be the one Ashley is referring to. It shows the Mk2 station on Station Street, and the way its entrance was at an angle to the road. This shows things by 1920s; the Mk3 station is operating and Ashely's building is marked in black - and bigger than it is now. And the one in the earlier map is still there. -

I'm guessing Ashley is referring to this building. -
Ashley alerted us back in June, 2013 that the Black Lion had closed and the rumour was that a supermarket was going up on the site...... Posted 31 July 2013 - 03:33 PM .. Black Lion at Radcliffe On Trent , massive place, is shut rumour is demolition and supermarket on site? Not surprised at this latest news as I just thought it was going ahead and I checked Google every now and then but nothing new. Surprised ROT residents are shocked - perhaps they should drink at the Manvers and keep up with the news like Ashley! Trouble is, Nottingham has changed that much since the 50/60s that it is v

Thanks Katyjay. Pearces wafer sandwich, absolutely beautiful. Much better than cornets; you could chase the melting icecream around the outside of the wafers and then bite into it once you were sure you wouldn't lose any. And thanks Ashley for reminding me of Padgetts shop on Monsall Street. Opposite where I lived in Chard St. was Robinsons with a similar set up. On the corner of Liddington St. and Ekowe St was Stonalls; another part of the establishment of the area. And obviously you will remember the sweet shop on the corner of Nottm. Road and Rossetta. They always had posters on their wal
