  1. https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library/image-details/poster/ntgm002712/posterid/ntgm002712.html That's interesting. The building looks very much like the structure built in the late 60s/early 70s on the site of the former Victorian Hyson Green police station. I passed it daily when walking to and from The Manning. It was then Staddon's bed shop. Today, that building is still there and still sells beds (in fact, it is still Staddon's) but the structure has been extended on the Radford Road side, in addition to the Gregory Boulevard side, and accommodates a numbe
  2. On a similar but lighter note.... My grandma who lived in Radford often came to visit us at Clifton by bus. That involved two buses - one from Radford into the City Centre, then another to Clifton. On a few occasions NCT were on strike and there were no buses from Radford to Nottm, so in mid-afternoon my grandma would walk up Alfreton Road, then down Derby Road to Broad Marsh bus station. A considerable distance for anyone of any age. Then she'd get a non-NCT bus from Broad Marsh to Clifton. Early evening (around 6.30pm) she'd do the return trip; bus from Clifton to Br
  3. We had Pearce's ice cream factory just up the road from us on Grant street, Radford. That were back in the annuls of time, known as 50s. Just thought I'd chuck that in for summat to say, as its so quiet.
  4. Thanks for the link CT. Much obliged. Have captured a map of Radford, but don't have clue how I did it. Cheers !
  5. My Aunt and Uncle lived in Denman Gardens. I believe Wolsey Avenue is now in it's place (where my sister used to live) the family have stayed very local to Radford.
  6. Anyone heard from peveril peril (Terry) and radford red (Nick) lately? Rog
  7. According to my Passenger Transport Year Book 1962 Camms had a garage and works at 60 Miall Street, Radford. The fleet at that time comprised 12 coaches and 3 single-deck buses. Chassis: 8 Bedford, 3 Leyland, 2 AEC, 2 Commer. Bodies: 13 Duple, 2 Harrington. Fleet livery cream/crimson which sounds more attractive than the orange/yellow stripes which were fashionable in the 80s.
  8. Yes Jill it is known to me, although i never went to that school, some of my pals did. I was though, a frequent visitor to the pawn shop on the opposite corner. I attended Douglas Road junior school 1948 to 1953, before progressing to boulevard school. Also known as Radford academy for sons of retired gentle folk.
  9. Miss Sparrow has asked if I will post this photo on her behalf. It shows the Rev F G Ralph with the choir outside St Peter’s church Radford in 1953/4. Jill’s parents were married here by Rev Ralph in 1949. Incidentally I was married here too in 1974 but not by Rev Ralph.
  10. This kind of thing ? My two aunts who lived on Garden Street, Radford, later moved to a flat (maisonette) on Bestwood, here on Eversley Walk. https://goo.gl/maps/91uxg9zphpNv3B5P9
  11. Unless you mean Staddon's (on Radford Road) I can't think of another. Freda Dudley-Ward was born a Birkin. The Duke of Windsor maintained a relationship with her for years but dropped her like a hot brick after Wallis worked her magic on him. The Duke purchased a farm somewhere in the south Nottinghamshire area as it was fairly close to the Dudley-Ward residence and it gave him a legitimate excuse to be in the area. He was a well known drinker in the local pub, where no one stood on ceremony with him which he seemed to like. They all knew why he was there. Freda was eve
  12. It is now Iceland. I think the only pub left now between the end of Radford Road/Gregory Boulevard to Cinder Hill roundabout is the Whitemoor. Newcastle Arms 'may' be coming back to life.
  13. 74 years ago this very day, my parents were on their honeymoon in Southbourne having married at St Peter's Church in Old Radford on 25 June 1949. My mother thought Southbourne was lovely and I have several photos of them taken during their stay.
  14. My parents were married at the church of St Peter, Old Radford. I've heard my father joke about throwing a brick through the window. Well. I think he was joking....
  15. There was a Shipstones beer off on the corner of Glentworth Road Radford very near where I lived. I’d occasionally be sent for a bottle of IPA if one of my Aunts was visiting. When you entered there was a mirror positioned in the doorway to the back room and you’d see the shop keepers face glance at you who would be seated in the back room with the tv on. She was very elderly and quite frail. You would have to wait until the adverts came on before she’d shuffle into the shop and serve you. The Shipstones horses used to deliver the beer on their horse drawn drays. A source of excitement and com
  16. The list posted above was cut and pasted from my spreadsheet, it needs updating and I will add corrections. However, at least one of them has a Nottingham connection, Arthur Holden, of 4 Gadd Street, Radford, Nottingham. He is buried in the Nottingham General Cemetery. 265895 Sgt Holden. Arthur. 2/7th Notts & Derby Regt. Died 04/06/1920. Nottingham General Cemetery. Group Photograph
  17. Nobody said it were a new joke @MRS B.,it were the only one I could think of at the time. Hope I've not gone down in your estimation. Between 1957 and 1965, when walking down Kennington Road, I always used to think that looking at the bond building always reminded me of a great, grey prison. It overshadowed everything around it. Well it did to me, as a little lad going to Radford boulevard school.
  18. Haven't seen Radford Red in quite a while. Hope he's ok.
  19. I remember Duddoos; and I thought the word was embarrassing even when I was a kid; likewise Tegs. My grandma in Radford always said Coursey for pavement; I never heard anyone else use it. With frozen jubblies you'd suck the flavour out of them and then be left with a lump of ice. I could never actually eat one in the normal way.
  20. I remember having to go to bed well before it was dark on summer nights in my childhood. I also remember standing on the window sill and seeing the winding wheel of Radford Pit in the distance. I must have been very young then. After tea, usually on Saturdays or Sundays, we'd walk to The Arboretum and, on one occasion, got caught in a terrific thunderstorm. My father was wearing a brand new Harris Tweed jacket which got soaked and was never the same again afterwards. Life was very different in those far off days, which now don't seem so far off.
  21. Allus thought that were Ilkeston road/Radford boulevard. The 4 nations...Education, Damnation,(Pawnshop),Ruination and Salvation. School, pawnshop, pub and church.
  22. For no reason other than I can, here's a list of the pubs within a short distance of Bentinck Road. It's not definitive. There's more the further out you go. Radford Rd / Claypole Road - The Langham Radford Rd / Hyson Street - The New Inn Birkin Avenue - The Albany Alfreton Rd / Palin Street - The Clarence Alfreton Rd / Bentinck Rd - Alma Inn Gadd Street - Forest Grove Inn Ortzen Street - Marquis of Waterford Alfreton Rd - Spread Eagle Alfreton Rd - Windmill Independent Street - The Forest Lion Hartley Road - Col Burnaby
  23. This may be the one you'd found; described as Adams Cottages from Adams Street - with Lindsay Street in the distance. https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library/image-details/poster/ntgm001020/posterid/ntgm001020.html Lindsay Street is marked here; the road on the left is Radford Road, and St Paul's church is still there. The narrow road between Lindsay Street and Forest Street is Adams Street, but not named on here.
  24. C.T, your link above just echo's what I've thought for ages. Moving along Lenton boulevard with Google, I was looking for Cottesmore school, but it's not there !! Just another load of houses. Totally unrecognisable, but at least Raleigh office block is still there, as is the library. Ashburnham avenue I've walked up thousands of times, sometimes taking a shortcut through Radford rec.to Ilkeston Road. I realise a lot of buildings don't change, but I'm afraid of a massive culture shock next visit.
  25. Before that though, wasn't it where Chettles yard was? Where Skills garage is/was ,just past is where the little road that went to Radford colliery. I think it's called New Road now. (I used to take that route and over the railway bridge as a short cut to Ainsley estate).
