  1. Well I'm back home and we've had a crackin' night over at our little community centre, with a turnout of 30 people, which at £2 entry netted 60 quid, half to the winners and half to our social fund. Better still though, the winners gave back their winnings to the social fund, so the residents benefit all round. I did a mixture of verbal questions, visual idententification and musical intros. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and because they bring their own refreshments and nibbles, nobody wentv without. Got back home at 22.45, knackered and just wanting a cup of tea. It's a lovely fee

  2. Got no interest in the politics thread whatsoever but some find it interesting so get on with it, I try to post what I've been on with during the day or the garden and hobbies threads but not everyone likes those threads, the historical side of Notts should have more posts I think because they are of members memories, I don't know what the answer is to creating more posts, we need to attract new members how we do that I don't have a clue, maybe a "welcome to new members" section and encourage them to post their thoughts and memories Rog

  3. Had a big sleep in this morning. didn't get up until 9.15!! Usually 6.15. Yesterday was the last day of the World Erg Challenge for Indoor Concept2 bikes and rowers. There are 6k entries and the idea is to row or ride as far as you can between Mar15th and April 15th = 32 days inclusive. I was trying to get into the top 50 so I made a last effort by rowing just over 15km and cycling 49km yesterday. Just didn't quite make it, finishing 56th. I am fortunate enough to be a team member of the ANCIENTS - a crew I joined 19 years ago when I retired at 66 (you have to be over 65) many were and still

  4. Went down to the coffee morning in the next village today in my car, got the bike out read to ride there but then the heavens opened up and down came a load of the white stuff, anyway got to the village hall ok and the gent who was supposed to be serving this week had to go home because his wife was taken ill so I stepped into the breach and went behind the counter to serve tea and coffee, I don't mind because any of the people there would do the same for me, anyway, great stories from ex Group Captain of the RAF telling us about his time flying in Phantoms during the seventies, there was a lo

  5. The Nottingham I remember from before I moved away was a vibrant place, weekends were spent at pubs and them nightclubs. It could get a bit rowdy when pubs/nightclubs turned out with the occasional fist fight but mostly it was good natured. Saturday afternoon was for going round the shops (being seen), Birdcage, Chelsea Girl and C&A ( where you could get a skirt for 50p at one point). Coffee at the Kardoma (is that how you spell it) them home to get ready for the evening. I can remember many late Saturday nights in the Market Square where someone usually ended up in one of the fountains,

  6. Tomorrow Australian time we celebrate our Remembrance Day 25th April is ANZAC Day The day starts with dawn services symbolising the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps that took part in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Whilst I have no relatives in Australia who took part in conflicts I do take time to remember my Dad who survived Dunkirk, was posted with the 8th Army to North Africa then invaded Sicily and fought up through Italy. My mum was in the WAAF initially on balloon crews and then on the bomber airfields of Notts/Lincs. My Maternal grandfather fought with the Royal Ulster Rifles

  7. People of a certain age might remember "Let's Go to San Francisco' by the Flowerpot Men in 1967, who were just a group of session musicians. They recorded a few other songs but none were successful. One was 'In a Moment of Madness'...which was later released by White Plains...although it was the same people. I'd forgotten how good it was.

Another very windy day but make the most of it eh?, dustbin day today out here, general waste and garden waste, first job this morning was to (once again) clear all the cat poo off the garden, I've got some netting on the way to see if that helps with the problem (fingers crossed) at the moment my back garden is covered in leaves from the tall tree in the corner of the field, do I clear them up or do I leave them to break down and act as some sort of feed for the grass?, Might try out the powered scroll saw today cutting out some components for the wooden "golly frogs" frogs and teddy bear mo

  11. Not seen this before, a remastered live Beatles concert in Washington, the first one after appearing on Ed Sullivan. The beginning is almost comically amateurish as the screaming audience are on all 4 sides of the stage and Ringo sits with his back to the band ! First Ringo and then Paul try and rotate the drum stage with no luck. This rotation of the drum set and mikes goes on throughout and with the way Ringo was bashing those drums (but still holding the rhythm), it's a wonder the kit held together. George opens with Roll Over Beethoven. It's a

I am not talking about the front-line workers in our health services, emergency services, armed forces, transport etc. I am talking about the rapid proliferation of "administrators/managers" whose sole aim appears to come up with more ways of having the front-line staff do more reporting and data collecting thus spending less and less time on doing what actually matters. Political staff should be reduced in all levels of govern

I have just taken my weeks blood pressure readings into the doctors, hope she is now happy with me and no further tablets. I am on 3 different ones a day now, I have told her that its the stress of living at home but she wont believe me. PS I called in Greggs for a bacon baguette and a coffee to take home and sat in front of the fire with them.

The baby's mother is among those killed. A female police officer shot the assailant dead when he raised the knife at her. My sincere condolences go out to all those impacted by this atrocity. The police say the assailant, 40 years old Joe Cauchi was known to police in Queensland and was believed to have had mental issues. I do hope the police officer Inspector Amy Scott does not face any repercussions or enquiri

  22. I remember The Golden Cage. It was there for years. Also Pennyfeathers on Goldsmith Street, in an old Victorian house that probably isn't there any longer. They were ideal places for finding theatrical costumes. When I was a child, we lived next door to an elderly couple whose only daughter, Muriel, had been one of my mother's best friends from early childhood. After attending Berridge and the dreaded Manning Grammar, Muriel went to Millers Business College and then found employment as a secretary to one of the directors of Player's. Muriel's mum, according to my mum, was determ

  23. Brew, I did something similar about 20 years ago when I was still working. I always cut my own hair and this particular time I was using the electric clippers on the lower back part of my head. I had attached a number 6 ,guard’ on the clippers, at least I THOUGHT I’d attached it securely but it came off without warning and dropped on the floor. I obviously stopped straightaway but there was now a small shaved area on the back of my head. I used an eyebrow pencil to colour on to my scalp - I was dark haired then - and luckily I had enough hair on the top and sides to back comb over the bar

  25. I have had to take Jj to the vets. We noticed he was licking his paw and we discovered a lump on the underside of his paw at the side of the large pad on his hind leg. A really awkward place to see not helped by the fact that he doesn’t like his paws touched, never has since he was a puppy. Vet had a look and decided to have him in to have a proper look and take a biopsy to send to the lab. This was done, vet said it appeared to be a lump of hard skin, didn’t bleed when it was cut into and there wasn’t anything stuck in his foot and biopsy was sent off. Went back to get results and was t

Had a lovely day out in York today, checked the weather forecast before setting off and it looks like being a nice day but rain coming in about 14.30 so off we went, bit of traffic on the A1 for some bridge repairs north of Barnsley but other than that it was a nice drive, used the park and ride at Askham Bar, £2.40 for the two of us which was nice, first off we went for a cuppa at the Castle tea rooms plus scrambled eggs on toast just under a tenner for both of us, then a walk around all the tourist routes including a walk around the wall and a riverside walk looking at the pleasure boats, ni

I also bought six sheep, a Landrover Defender, a heated propagating frame, a pair of green wellies and a flat cap. I sometimes chew on a piece of straw as well.

  35. I’ve used Toro mulching mowers for the past six years, both a ride on and a walk behind. They chop grass and leaves into a fine mulch so I don’t have to collect the cuttings and drive back and forth to the compost heap. The mulch feeds the lawns and I must say they’ve never looked better. I cut about an acre and a half so I have a wealth of grass cutting experience! I’ve cut the grass six times this year already.

Last week we spent two nights in a beautiful country house hotel in Dorking attending the wedding of our niece who lives in Washington. A second marriage for both her and the Groom, 6 kids between them! Family travelled from all over the UK, USA and beyond and it was a fantastic family gathering. Then we drove to Poole with brother-in-law and wife from Victoria, BC, along with their daughters, one from Toronto and one from Costa Rica. Then off to Devon for 2 nights to catch up with an old school friend of my husband, whilst there w

A lovely visit to Barnsley market today, weather was nice and warm with very little breeze, loads of friendly people about and some great market stalls and shops to explore, the food hall catered for just about every taste from good old home made pies right through to far eastern menus at a fantastic price, I sat down waiting for Mrs P to bring the drinks and food and I said to this guy on the next table "nice and warm today me duck" he immediately replied "you not from Barnsley are you with an accent like that" No was the reply he then said "you from Nottingham aren't you" wow is my accent st

Just been reading Bluecoat history, think it was written a while ago,, The Blue Coat School This was founded in 1706, but the present building, which stands at the foot of the High Pavement, was erected in 1723, on ground given by Mr Wm. Thorpe, a benevolent attorney. It contains a large school room, and a suite of apartments for the residence of the master, who has 100 guineas a year, and he is allowed six tons of coals annually for the use of the school. Two statues, in niches at the front of the building, represent a boy and a girl in their school costume. The charit

Just cooked breakfast on the BBQ out on the patio looking at the sea which is like a mill pond. Fried bread, 1 egg, heaps of mushrooms, two very spicy chevapicic sausages, the square ones so they don't roll about on the BBQ so you can cook them evenly and a large truss tomato that smelled and tasted like it was from my grandads back yard green house.
