  1. With deep sadness I report that my dad is not with us. Stubborn old bogger. He lived for some days after having a bad fall and suffered a severe brain haemorrhage and he is now at peace. Please, my friends here, give him a prayer tonight and bless him peace. As a father I could wish for nothing better. He made my childhood delightful, and my Christmases very special.I told him this today and hugged him in his final hours. I could wish for nothing more. He was a strength and a source of wisdom. A family organiser, as I am sure that you know that role within a family. He was a kind and gen

  2. While lunching in Derby with my sister recently, she said she needed to go to Waitrose for some shopping. I told her there was no Waitrose in Derby city centre but would she have it? We walked round the shopping centres looking for Waitrose, no luck. There isn't one, I said. Then she started asking random shoppers where Waitrose was. There isn't one, they said. Next she approached the centre manager who was toddling off for his lunch. No Waitrose in Derby, he informed her. So she asked at Boots. There isn't one. Ten people in all, not including my good self, told her there was no Waitro

  5. #27 Compo, I bet I know how you did it, because I did it myself tuther day. In fact, I do it nearly every day. 1, Your toast popped up, and you wanted it a bit browner, so you popped it back in for the same timing and by the time it popped up agen , it wa bont. 2, When you or your wife cleaned the toaster you accidentally moved the timer switch. I did it last week, only I went in the other room and closed the door and forgot, half an hour later when I walked into the kitchen and couldn't see through the smoke. I stood there for a while wondering where the burnt food smell was coming from.

  6. Lizzie I am proud of him. Not enough is said about the parents who do it right, and provide well beyond their means. Although I got some sponsorship I passed out at Sandhurst. My parents were there. FRom Hyson Green to Sandhurst is a long path, but I made it and made my parents proud.

  10. One of the staff at David Lloyd managed to set the fire alarm off doing the 'double toasted' thing a while back. They evacuated the building but eventually had to give up trying to persuade me (and others) to get out of the outside pool and go to the car park for safety. I mean just how much more safe from fire can you be than in a swimming pool outdoors?

  12. Been to Derby today to have lunch with my sister. I'm not an eavesdropper, but my hearing being pin sharp, I can't help overhearing other peoples conversations, especially if they insist on shouting down their ever present mobile phones. I don't know about "when you're dead, you're dead," but I often wonder whether some of these folks are alive, in more than a physical sense! Now that sounds arrogant and judgemental but, ye gods and little fishes!! I like this one... He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool. Shun him. he who knows and knows not that he knows is asleep. Wa

  15. Sorry for the quoting mick, but this is important, at least to me. We are all here for you. Those are exactly the words you want to hear. I have been through some wars, literally, and as you would expect, as a nurse I have seen some people through horrible things. The essential point about those very kind words is that when you feel like you are falling down, there is someone there. Someone will help. Even to know that there is someone there is enough. To listen, to console, to advise, to support.

  18. A little while back we had a group of friends round for drinks. One fella was happily scratching one of my cat's back, when said cat turned round and bit his arm (never done this before). I went to get some antiseptic ointment, came back with the tube and put some on his arm. Showing him the tube, I said, look, this will do the trick, only to find it was sunscreen. Well, I had had a glass of wine! Anyhoo, it did the trick, arm healed nicely. No harm, no foul.

  25. Mercury dancer, you are in my thoughts too, as is your mum. My parents were married for 57 years and parting, when it comes, is extremely traumatic. If you are very fortunate, you are born to good parents who love you and do their very best for you. Sadly, good parents are not as common as we might hope, so you...and I...have been blessed. You only have one dad. Mine was very special. Always there, although not a demonstrative man. He never interfered and only ever gave me one piece of advice: "I don't mind what you do, as long as you're happy...and you don't follow the herd!" He wasn't a f

  30. A tip from my engineering days re: removal of metal lids from jars. Take one gas welding torch and use flame to create a "Hot-spot" on the edge of the metal lid. The hot spot causes the metal to expand and break the seal, thus enabling one to turn the lid and remove it with ease. Don't forget to wear leather gloves for this operation as heat can burn.

  32. Post No.1 Benjamin: I have an engineering vice in the garage that I use to remove "Childproof" tops from tubes, jars, bottles, etc.. Simply clamp the top firmly in the vice and gripping the tube, bottle or whatever in both hands push and twist at the same time. Make sure that you twist your hands and not your body or folk will think you are dancing.

  35. Mercurydancer: I'm happy for you that you managed to tell him your thoughts on your childhood and Christmases before you lost him. I was unable to do the same due to a major fall-out some time before my dad's death. Your dad will have died with happy memories in his own thoughts.

  36. My hearing loss is difficult to correct. I have normal hearing up to 2Khz and then nothing. The graph just plummets like a cliff face. Any normal hearing aids simply amplify across the frequency range, which is no good for me. These new ones can, to a point, selectively amplify so they can leave my low frequency unamplified and amplify the mid ranges. Alas, still no high frequency response. A year or so ago, my brother paid £1,000 for a pair of reconditioned hearing aids that are similar to my new ones; he thought that going private would get him a better service - it didn't.

  37. I know it is an age thing, but I cannot understand why men want to walk around with a scruffy-looking unshaven face. I assume that they think it makes them more attractive to women. As someone who has shaved every morning of his life since having to, it is beyond me why such people do not feel self-conscious. I know this sounds ridiculous but when I watch a snooker player on TV and he not playing well after having his tea break, I think - if you had had a shave and freshened up you would have felt a lot better and played better. A good shave, and perhaps a dab of something, before a night out

  38. And yet he allowed his instincts and his inherited prejudices to push him away from the truth he had discovered. I've not kept up too well recently, but I'm sure I can't be the only one who wonders where theoretical astrophysics and astronomy are going these days. The phrase 'house of cards' springs to mind... along with echoes of the Phlogiston Theory. 'Dark Matter'. 'Dark Energy' ? When you have to invent imaginary stuff to make your theories work, there's a good chance your theories are wrong. Just sayin'.. Col

  41. A small story. My dad was of a big family and went into national conscription. My uncle Cyril died but that is an aside, My dad told me that on the day my dad got onto the bus to go into conscription his father, my grandfather, kept his distance but saw my father off with a wave onto the bus. When I joined the army it was a bit tough. When I went through P Company it was more than that. I thought about quitting on one evening. I just put my pack on and went to the bus stop. I wanted to go alone. I got on the bus and he waved me off. it was a display of immense compassion. To this day I h
