  1. The death of Prince Philip has just been announced. He visited Australia 21 times He certainly was a character and will certainly be missed May he rest in peace

  3. Awesome, thanks for the warm welcome!! I lived in Grantham when young, then other areas of the England over a period of 16 years. My parents and my in-laws are still in Notts and Lincs, so we come back as often as we can, and it feels like my second home. My first memory of Nottingham was a trip to the Tales of Robin Hood and Victoria Center in early 90s, last visit was Lace Market area in 2019 - it has changed a lot during those 30 years alone! My husband’s maternal line goes back to 1700s in St. Ann/Mapperley/Sneiton/West Bridgford areas. I started looking into t

  4. There are some rather churlish comments here, as per, yet when the world went crackers over a guy tottering about raising money for charity (and very well done to him), not one voice of dissent. The media went into the captains exploits ad infinitum yet one evening when we show a little respect to a good man for a life well lived, out come the knockers. Next there will be suppositions and moral outrage about the cost of his funeral plus a whole slew of whataboutery... Shame on you.

  6. I believe he stated categorically that he did not want a state funeral, just a quiet send off. I never met the man and although I certainly don't approve of his hunting/shooting activities, he is a husband, father, grandfather, etc. His wife, like many wives who have been married for so many years, will be distraught by his departure. I witnessed my own mother's inability to cope with the demise of the man she'd been married to for almost 57 years. Just because one is HMQ, it doesn't make it any easier. She's still human. I feel for her.

  7. I had a lot of admiration for Prince Philip, it couldn’t have been easy being the Monarch’s Consort for almost 70 years. I feel very sorry for the Queen, she’s lost her right-hand man. Such a shame he didn’t make it to 100 in just a couple of months time. I wonder if there’ll be a State Funeral with the virus still being centre-stage?

  11. Excellent food DJ360 often used to take them to work on the night shift in a special Thermos with a wide neck so you could get the sausages in and out. The brand Fray Bentos was named after the port in Uruguay where the products were packaged and shipped from. Still partial to a toasted corned beef and cheese sarnie with lashings of HP sauce for my lunch.

  12. As we get older it is not good for us to go up ladders and climb about on roofs (rooves) or in roof spaces so I have to get trades people to come and do stuff that I used to do myself. I have a fundamental issue with paying someone for something I could do myself and often better than so called "tradies". My wife gets upset when we have a tradesman come around to do a job and within a few minutes I send them packing because it is either obvious they don't know what they are doing or they spend most of their time on the mobile instead of the job they are being paid to do, especially when t

  13. I tend to get up late, certainly in the winter, or at any other time.. unless the weather is warm.. in which case I get up early and continue sleeping on my sun lounger instead of stinking in bed. I also tend to go to bed late.. because I enjoy chatting on here and a couple of other sites last thing. Eitherway.. the morning....or what's left of it.. usually sort of drifts towards lunchtime..which then pulls me into the lunchtime news.. so it's about 1:30 pm before I start doing anything. I think it was Kev who pointed out 'upthread' that being retired allows you to choo

  14. Introductions... Canadian prairie girl who moved to Lincolnshire for school, married a Notts man, and brought him back to the prairies. We now have two kids who are half Prairie, half Notts. Now doing the family history on both sides. My mother-in-law’s family go way back in Nottingham, wow. So I am learning all about the history of Nottingham and areas around it, loving it!! Found this website and know I can learn a lot more still, and hope to find out more about specific areas that the in-laws came from. Missing life over there, looking forward to connecting with and r

  16. There is a predisposition by governments to choose their moments when releasing bad news, the most notable in recent times being Jo Moore and 9/11. Today whilst the world is looking away Cameron admits trying to pressure Sunak into looking favourably on some scheme he's involved in - whilst in Scotland they slipped out this afternoon that the Scots economy has shrunk by 5 billion pounds (3%) and the school exam results are quite bad, terrible in fact. In matters that have important implications for independence it seems Sturgeon is a bit reluctant to mention them in her campaign mess

  17. Thank God for that! I haven’t watched the soaps since the 1970s and Comedy/Comedians are awful these days, the only comedians I enjoy are Peter Kay (who seems to have retired) and John Bishop (his programme about Beluga Whales has been fantastic and heart-warming). I’m a proud Royalist and in the past few months I’ve enjoyed lots of Saturday night TV programmes about our Royal Family, whilst my husband is watching football or boxing on another TV. However, as much as I admire Prince Philip and feel so sorry for the Queen, I do think his passing has been overdone on the telly and radi

  20. At Marsdens the Corned Beef (for slicing) came to us in 6lb cans in that familiar shape....we would always slice it by hand/knife....and the brand was mostly 'Libby's'..........1/4 per Qtr if memory serves me right....... Luncheon meat came in 4lb round cans ..usually 'Plumrose'......9d per Qtr........... Haslet.1/-...Brawn..1/-..Cooked Ham.2/6...Cooked shoulder.1/9......was all purchased from TN Parr's delivery vans...

  21. Corned beef from Norman, the grocer, was encased in beige-coloured polythene which was peeled back as the slices were cut off. This was, presumably, to prevent the exterior of the block drying out. In those days, we didn't know about the synthetic oestrogens contained in plastics. I never liked corned beef, so never ate it. I was far more interested in the mature cheddar cheese, cut by a cheesewire.

  28. My mother had a horror of tinned items such as Fray Bentos and corned beef. She never bought them. Our corned beef, which my father liked, came from our local independent grocery shop, just round the corner on Alfreton Road. A one man show. I recall vividly, sitting in my little bucket pushchair, watching him slicing corned beef onto greaseproof paper. He wore a large, plain gold signet ring on his left hand. Bacon, haslet, ham, etc all kept in the glass-fronted fridge. I recall him having tinned stuff like Fray Bentos on the shelves but most people made their own pies in those da

  30. I’ve not been meeting people to talk to at length for over a year. Yesterday a retired farmer friend dropped by and we were chatting for about two hours about how the village used to be, tractors and the dearly departed. It was really good to have someone outside of the family to speak with. Perhaps I might have bored him. He did make make me an offer on my old 1965 Ford Dexter though. I hadn’t thought about selling but he’s looking for a restoration project. I don’t use it and I still have my 1952 grey Fergie to play with. I’ll pump up the tyres and pressure wash it and see if I can bear to s

  31. I’m not a food snob but I do like plain home cooked food. My wife’s an excellent cook. The only thing that comes out of a tin here is baked beans or sometimes soup at lunchtime. Fray Bentos pies are the favourite of long distance yachtsmen where fresh food other than fish is not available. Whether they prevent scurvy is doubtful.

  33. One of my pet peeves on being retired is that no matter how you organise your day and keep busy and happy you dont get Bank Holidays off. Remember the joys of thinking its only 2 weeks to the BH and the pleasure of not having get up and to go to work and the time planning what you are going to do. That pleasure has been taken away from us, we should start a pressure group to bring about the end of oppression of our minority, well all others seem to find a reason to demonstrate and we are miserable old ***** with plenty of time to spare.

  43. Interesting. I don't remember it, and having browsed through one of the examples I think I can see why. Published by Mushroom bookshop, it's obviously not aimed at a mainstream readership. Some of it is a fascinating step back in time to the 80s...such as pubs and gigs and shops. But its Mushroom origins also mean it sometimes strays into loony left territory.

The Penguins * My three bestest are going to change according to all kinds of variables and moods. These 3 are likely to be in my 20 most favourite songs/tunes but there are so many others that are great and important to me for all kinds of reasons.

  45. Here's another holiday photo. Judging by the number in the bottom right hand corner, I suspect this one was taken by one of those photographers who used to patrol the town and beach taking shots for you to buy the following day. This is me in 1954 or 55 with my grandparents. Taken on Lumley Road, Skegness. My grandfather was a WWI veteran and my grandmother was a spiritualist medium; in fact, she is probably watching me post this right now!
