mick2me 3,033
Age makes a big difference here? However when I got my first car in 1970, I dont remember the insurance being partculary expensive. When I moved to Carlton in 1975 it was cheaper because I lived in the county not the city. albert smith 803
Ouch! horrible Monday made worse with the car insurance renewal arriving, £385 last year £488 this! so on the phone " Yes, we can take £41 off"?? still not acceptable, go to 'specialist for over 50s, (no not Saga) safer drivers rewarded, up to 80% off with 9 years ncd' etc. Quote £826!!!! obviously over 50s but not 80s! shop around and settle on £383 inc. B/c. Phew, thought I wasn't going to get my 50 years driving in next May. (still 'clean')
Cliff Ton 10,483
What's your car ? Lamborghini? Ferrari? Unless it's something like that, you are being asked far too much.
Michael Booth 7,364
Albert, my wife pays £198.15 fully comp on her car and she's with One Call Insurance. A big difference from £488. I forgot to mention that she gets a years RAC included in the price.
FLY2 10,109
Mine has actually gone down £28 this year .
albert smith 803
I should have tried here before phoning around, I hope your suggestions help others but Thank You All. My car Cliff ton is a 20 year old Honda Civic, Automatic with 62 thou. on the clock, annual mileage under 3000, pity about my age but I can't change that!
The Pianoman 1,535
Try SAGA. They won't insure me van but last time I insured a car with them about 2 years ago I paid £198 on a 1998 Rover 825 Sterling Coupe with business use. That was protected TPFT. MelissaJKelly 2,124
Car insurance is the main reason I still haven't brought a car after passing my test a few months ago. The insurance for people my age is ridiculous and is double, if not more the price of the actual car!
LizzieM 9,514
I know Melissa, remember those days with my sons. It gets more reasonable when you reach 25. Best thing you can do is get a smart little Audi as a company car, let THEM pay the insurance!
Rob.L 1,090
Our daughters car insurance last year, when she passed her test aged 18, was £1600 for a Peugeot 206. Her renewal this year is less than £800. As for Albert's quotes, they are scary! I'm paying £127 fully comp for a car that's under two years old. I did get a renewal quote for over £240, but a quick check on Go Compare came up with an price of £140. I then rang my insurer to cancel and they not only matched, but beat, the best quote. Daft thing is that the two quotes (renewal and new quote) are from the same company!
Compo 10,328
It pays to shop around and also to be cheeky when buying motor insurance. I just had a renewal notice and was disappointed to see that they had put 42% on my bill. I notice that they do this a lot these days, hoping that you will just renew and not notice the huge annual increase. So, I phoned them up (Saga) and asked why they were adding so much to my bill. The lady was a bit taken aback at my question but rallied with the usual - I'll just see the manager and see what he says and then came back with "We can offer you a discount for being a renewing customer and I can get your bill down from £178 to £158, how's that sir?" I hummed and harred a bit and then said "I'm going to shop around a bit before I make a decision can I get back to you in about an hour or so?" The lady actually offered to call me back so I agreed. I went to another provider and found that they would beat he £158 but only by a couple of pounds, so, when she called me back I said that I have had a better offer but if she could further reduce my bill I would stay with Saga but it would have to be a good reduction. Again she said that she would have to speak to her manager and lo! a moment later she managed to take another £18 off the bill for no loss of cover! Apparently, they had a "promotion" on the AA roadside breakdown recovery and could save me money on that. We finally settled at £140 for fully comp insurance at that price - some £38 less than the original bill. Advice: 1. Shop around 2. Be a little bit cheeky but don't push it too far
broxtowelad 175
Good advice Compo. It's always worth checking out the competition when it comes to renewing insurance etc. I change suppliers of gas, electricity, telephone and broadband annually to get a better deal. poohbear 1,360
That's cheap....mine was £184 last year...£228 this. I phoned 'em and managed to get £20 off. But as the guy said, the 6% premium tax has been increased by the soddin' chancellor up to 9 -1/2%....raising over a billion for the treasury to waste on wars and windmills. Tax Tax Tax...this ruddy country...they charged me around £20 VAT to have my old faithful companion dog killed this week....bas*****!
catfan 14,793
Good advice that Compo as I am with Saga too. Last night I did an online quote with them & a few more, when my renewal comes any day now if it's a silly price I am going to quote THIER own online quote ! To see what they say about that. Be careful with Saga AA cover. The sly bleeder's last year promised me the whole shooting match what seemed like a good price. When the paperwork arrived I checked & found that recovery was for only TEN miles. To add full recovery was another £39 ! Insurances companies are the absolute scum of the earth. I will switch every year to save a £. Sod em.
Rob.L 1,090
It's times like these when the meerkat comes in handy. Every year, the insurance companies try it on, and every year, I shop around - whether it's for the house, the car, the caravan... Someone somewhere in these companies must believe that customers are either lazy or stupid when they jack-up renewal quotes. If they actually tried to give the customer a decent quote to start with, they wouldn't have "churn", or so many phone calls.
NewBasfordlad 3,599
Just renewed my public liability insurance. The quote from the original company was £520 on challenge that went down to £445. Removing £2000 worth of tool insurance took it down to £380. Then got a quote from a new company complete with the tool insurance for £274. When the original company rang to enquire if I was going to renew I explained that even if the beat the quote I wouldn't ensure with rip off merchants. The thing now is most of these people have your card details on file and run an automatic renewal process. So if you don't challenge the quote or ring to tell them not to renew without your permission they just take your money. The only word is SCAM!!!
TBI 2,351
Well, it is and it isn't. I've used Saga for a few years for several cars and bikes, they usually send me a good quote up-front. However, many Insurance companies don't reward customer loyalty and rely on apathy to get higher premiums. I always go through the comparison sites for quotes anyway and argue with my renewer to match the lowest. If they don't meet, I would move to the lowest. I never agree to auto-renew, but it doesn't matter as I'll be expecting some haggle anyway. Using what I've paid as a benchmark, next year my challenge is to see if I can get even lower. The way I look at it, those that pay over the odds are doing a great job, they're paying for my cheap insurance.
Trickymicky 57
We found Swiftcover, which isn't on comparison sites cheapest, if your a low risk although Its all online, you cant speak to a person. While inputting your details you can mess around with things such as voluntary excess and see what impact it has on the premium very easily. Also, often, the more drivers you declare, the more the premium seems to go down, same with some other companies too, although, obviously it doesent work with such as a newly qualified driver being added. radfordred 6,284
I think most of you would be aware the ridiculous quotes for new young drivers both my kids passed at 17 most quotes were around £2000 plus for even the smallest engined cars, but also the older you get your premium rockets, my Father born in 1927 is still driving, he's only doing 2,000 odd miles if that. He's just had his renewal quote which for the first time is now into four figures, he asked me to have a look on the net to see what I could find, before he decides if he is going to carry on driving or not. Done the comparison sites most would not even insure him, not one beat the quote he had received though the post, anyway I will be breaking the news to him later on today, I just wondered if folk were aware, the longer & the more experience you have driving your premiums go up? Has anyone actually packed up driving? At 52 I would happily never drive again (well to East Midlands airport & back) even though it now part of my new job roll. catfan 14,793
Totally agree Red, I never had a claim all my driving life but the renewal premium went up every year, it's about time the bad drivers were hammered, not the good drivers.
loppylugs 8,429
Still driving with a clean record at 72. As you say premiums go up every time as well. Now they are pushing a monitoring device with the excuse if you drive few miles you get a rate reduction. They play down its gps and speed monitoring abilities. I will not be constantly monitored by theses creeps. So I guess I will face the choice one of these days. Maybe get me bike out again,
Ayupmeducks 1,730
One accident, I'm 70, and that was in Australia, dickhead of a woman ran into the back of me while I was waiting to turn into my driveway. She and the idiot behind her were charged with Negligent driving, my no claims stayed in tact, Insurance company was happy with the police report. The feller who had run ito the woman who rear ended me had just had the front end of his car rebuilt, new radiator, new grill, new bumper, he was in tears literally. I'd say he had a few thousand bucks worth of damage to his car. I tend to stay within the posted speed limits as I hate funding cities and counties. On freeways I set the cruise control to a few miles per hour under the posted speed limit, then I'm not forever checking the speedo.
