  1. I'm having a pretty mundane day. Up to my neck in Cooking 'Steak Pie' and assorted veg for the family. Also bulk cooked Bolognaise to freeze in portions. Hubbs just gone out for a power walk round the block. I walked into the front room for summat and the door bell rang, now I am a bit of a chicken and don't like answering the door when i'm alone., so I hid behind the door but realised three rings later they weren't going away. I gave in and went to the door. There on the step stood a lady who lives so far up the road I can't call her a close neighbour and we haven't got to know he

  12. Following on from my first post here about car trackers. This morning I had a missed phone call. I first check the number to make sure they weren’t phoning about PPI or problems with my computer or trying to get me to arrange installation of a smart meter. Turned out it was Vodaphone car tracker so I called them back. Was asked for the registration number and mother’s maiden name to make sure they were speaking to the right person. Then this young lady asked if everything was ok with the car (she gave the make of vehicle). I told her that we’d sold that particular car a month ago and the re

  15. We had Max put to sleep a few years ago as he was very ill. Hes buried in our garden and Misty our dog now goes every evening with my husband to say goodnight. No matter how late it is when hes finished work he says " come on Misty lets go and see Max". Up she jumps and gets there before my husband. Faithful.

  17. No, She just said I have bought you a present. I remember the first time we met, it was Halloween, about three years ago and the local parents and children come around the houses that are decorated and we all have a laugh and chat. She had just moved to the area and couldn't get over how friendly we were for no reason or gain. We could have seemed odd because it all started for our granddaughter who grew out of it all now 17, but the locals loved our effort so we carried on. I think she felt welcome and has never forgotten our friendliness. It does work out a bit expensive by the time we have

  18. I open the door, it seems to be MY job! However our dog barks like mad when the doorbell rings, in fact he barks even when someone opens the gate. I think I’d feel more stressed by hiding and not going to the door. I remember me and my mum hiding from the rent man when I was a little girl, no money, hard times.

  26. Bit of a nice one last night, I hosted a poker night and lost....but a couple of very old friends came an ex army buddy and his lady wife. I know the lady has been learning to paint for a number of years what I did not know was that she is into steam locos. I was given a calendar made up of 12 of her paintings all of different steam locos and apparently all in their correct setting and factually correct. Having just lost to her trip aces I mentioned a back scene for my new 'n' gauge layout "not a problem" I was told. So I now have my own private artist ready to work for ...........

Mrs C sadly been there a lot more than me, a few times I came home from work to see a hastily scribbled not saying "Pick me up from the Vets" knew straight away it wasn't good news, minor ailments I would take the pet to the Vets after work.

  31. I disagree about flying saucers. I, together with my wife and two children, saw one flying low over the Trent Valley some 25 years ago. The strange thing was that we just said “look, there’s a flying saucer” in a matter of fact sort of way. There was no point in getting excited about it as nobody would have believed us anyway as I’m sure you don’t believe me now. It was the “classic” round shape of a flying saucer with portholes around the edge. I’m sure it was an explainable phenomenum. As I say, you’ll think I’m talking rubbish so no more to be said really!

  36. Not about transport, but I'm currently reading a book by Joy James 'Yo'd Mek a Parson Swear' It's very well written and full of funny, sad, interesting and nostalgic memories of her life growing up in Nottingham the 1940s & 50s. With an eye for detail the author takes the reader back to those good and not so good old days during and after the second world war. I've just found out that there are other similar books by Joy James so I'm looking forward to reading those too.

  38. Thank to all for the responses. Given that the tools came from a carpenter's toolchest I would think that the corner setting tool is for frames and the, for chisel it certainly is, must certainly be what Ann's husband says - a deep mortice chisel.

  39. That record takes me back to my old skiffle group days!. I made a tea chest bass and learnt to play the guitar from Bert Weedon's "Play in a Day" book - bit of a misnomer that! I sold my first guitar to a chap from school at Mellish - Allan Bell. He lived just over the border from Bulwell in Hucknall and his dad used to own "The Terminus Garage" where the trolley buses used to turn round. I bought my second instrument from Jack Brentnall's in Theatre Square. It was a Hofner Congress and took most of my savings at around £25. I've still got it! I electrified it and bought a cheap amplifier from

  40. Two weeks ago I dragged myself into the 21st century and bought a mobile phone. I don't really want one but with my medical conditions thought it best to have one handy if summat happens while I am out. Sainsbury's in Arnold had a nice one, reduced from £20 to £15. Went in there today and the price was back up to £20 again. That's a breakfast in Bulwell 'spoons paid for. Haven't had one lately - anyone feel like one?

  44. The latest issue of the Basford Bystander (No.186) has an excellent article about the Seely family who sunk the pits around the Cinder Hill area and were involved in the General Hospital, the Cedars and various of the Halls and Granges. There is a nice picture of Broxtowe Hall. Also in the issue is an interesting old map of the enclosures in Old Basford in 1792. I will give the magazine a deserved plug. It was founded and run by Stan Smith until his death a couple of years ago. Since then his wife Christine has taken up the reigns and is doing a superb job. It is only eight p
