  1. I'm sorry I am not posting much just lately, but have been through a few months of ill health. First Covid 19 that knocked us out for two months and now Pancreatitis, which is still very painful. It has taken my fun away for a while, but going to phone the Docs again on Monday and find out if I am going in the right direction. I still love Nottstalgia, When I left Nottingham in 1966, it was still the old City, but shortly afterwards, the demolition started. Places I had known all my life, just disappeared and because we started married life with very little dosh, there was no car for a f

  2. A couple of the things about Nottstalgia I'm most grateful for is the variety of things I've learned and hopefully the many new friends I've made. I realise that some I've never met but it's like having a pen friend of sorts. I would never have written to anybody, apart from the odd birthday or Christmas card. How else would I get contacts in Australia, Canada, USA, France and Italy and any other place I've missed. You get a great buzz when somebody responds to your posts and you can soon build up a rapport with folks who you could walk by in the street and never know. I love the friendly bant

  3. I sometimes feel like an intruder. I cant remember a lot about Nottingham. The little i know may not be interesting to some but being a member on this site has brought me in touch with a lot of people , some of whom I've met. Some I would like to meet ( but I'm not returning to Nottingham so thats out of the question ) so I'll be content to post about the things I do and see. Maybe a point of view from another country. I think its nice to see and hear what others in other countries are doing. And if theyve had a different breakfast, lunch or dinner who cares, its keeping us all in touch.

  4. Really, we have no control over new members not contributing. Many have just joined to ask about a place/ street or family name. And many a time a long-standing member has helped them with information, never to hear from the new member again. I don't think it's our fault, we make new members welcome. A lot of the time they only joined to get answer to a question, without a thank you to their helper. A sign of the times!

  7. Look at it this way BK, if some of those who think they are so clever had to do things that you have done in life would they still think they were clever. I have known people who were fine in their theoretical knowledge but were useless when it came to being practical. Someone once tried a bit of oneupmanship with a friend of mine by sneering he went to university. Without batting an eyelid my friend responded "so did Burgess and Mclean but look how much use they were". Total silence followed. My grandfather was a down to earth type and one of his expressions was " if you are content you are t

  8. Ian' s insistant posts were getting a niusance and dominating the site. I agree that some of his posts were interesting but please a little and often not heavy on posts like they were. But there was more to this than overposting.

  9. Ian brought an element to the Forum that is now sadly lacking, apart from Compo's jokes and amusing images which keep me entertained and guarantee my attendance.

  11. May I clarify my recent lead-foot outburst - I see Nottstalgia as a resource about Nottingham, its' buildings, streets, roads and all the people who live/lived there. Their homes, neighbours, friends, schools , places of work, the shops, pubs events, what people did , events that happened and so on. When I log on I hope to see something that will remind me of the city and hopefully something or someone I remember. When I read posts that are only about someones' personal life I have to think that does not belong on Nottstalgia, there are ( I believe) loads of purely social media sites wher

  12. Who said romance was dead? Ive just switched on my tv and have watched a Neopolitan wedding or should I say the build up to their wedding. Starting with choosing the perfect place to choosing the dress. The scene the evening before the big day shows the family starting to prepare for the following day. The bride and her female siblings and mother all with their hair in rollers when there is a commotion outside with neighbours calling her name to come to the window or better still to come outside. She gets to the window to see her future husband standing next to someone who is singing a neopol

  13. Everything IAN123 posted was of interest to me and he showed great enthusiasm for the historic City of Nottingham. FAR superior to reading bo**ocks about what someone had for breakfast etc etc etc..... That's the stuff that moderators need to put the brakes on, is it not ? Or am I out of touch with what nostalgia means ? Regards all

  14. I voted labour however I get the feeling that 'Labour' is redundant. The very word 'labour'. Do people think of themselves as labour? It used to be OK when millions of us worked at Players, Raleigh or 'dahn pit'. today we work in the service industry, health, teaching, tech, industries etc. far more middle professionals and individuals about who in the old days would have been in the Players warehouse. We used to have a political identity but even the NE have lost that. Lib Dems have failed to take up the new class and the Conservative have won through on populism. Tony tried to re brand Labou

  15. In all honesty HSR, I can't remember. I think I was just trawling through the web for pictures of Nottingham and I saw a reference to nottstalgia so I had a nosey and was fascinated with what I read, so thought I would give it a whirl. It has to be said though, that at that time, I had absolutely no idea what one was supposed to do. Including Facebook, Twitter etc. And I've still no idea about that lot, (the jury's still out). I have joined something called Viber, courtesy of my long lost cousin, who was found after 60 years, thanks to Katyjay. In truth, I'd be lost without NS. Apologies for

  16. Without even counting the sub-headings there are at least 55 topics specifically about Nottingham or some aspect of it. Paste hasn't worked, this is in reply to Brew, i joined 2 years ago, how many new members, made over ten posts in this time? I'd guess under 5, if you bin, drop one, keep one. I wasn't schooled in Nott's & have never worked there, I found Ian123 contribution's superb. I have been in forums, since the newsgroup days, mid nineties, I have never known people criticised for too much content, normally, they are thanked, for their hard work!

  18. Thank you for your words Ian, I'll take it as a vote of confidence. Incidentally, I have a cousin in British Columbia, on New Forest Road, nip round and say hello you might get a cup of tea, if the bears don't get you. Ps you can always pm me a picture and I will reciprocate.

  19. I voted for Caroline Henry. I think that at 72 Tipping was past his prime for the job. I'm not really sure why we need a commissioner but I agreed with her about not moving the Newark nick to the outside of the town. Let's hope she brings some fresh ideas to Notts policing.

  31. Spike - in my Arnold boyhood days (1950s) we used to play in a stream that was, for some reason, called 'the dyke' and 'swimming' in there, among other things, were 'toe-bitters. I believe this stream was the Daybook, or a tributary of it. It sourced up near what is now Howbeck Road, ran under Coppice Rd., parallel with Bentwell Ave, under Bonnington Drive and eventually into the pond on Arnot Hill Park. We would spend hours playing in the area between Bonnington Drive and Coppice Rd! Before the development of the John Lewis building on Brookfield Rd and all the housing estates, we could walk

  35. Why thank you little sis. A most encouraging response. I've tried to do my best, wherever I was. I don't think I've ever envied anybody who had a better job than me. Sometimes thought, "that looks interesting, wouldn't mind a crack at that". Had some interesting jobs and some funny experiences. Wouldn't change my life, even if I could. It's the same when we had two disabled sons, don't regret one minute.
