  2. We lived there in the shop on the corner of Mayfield grove (No 43), My Mum and Dad ran the shop, it was an off license, I remember the nursery school facing one side of the shop, used to walk past it on the way to Collygate. I remember MR Conolley, he was the only person I remember on that row of houses, he used to sit on the doorstep singing Irish songs, I used to be mesmorized by his singing, then he'd ask me to nip to the shop for 10 No.6 tipped, which my dad would give me and I'd deliver them safely. I was born in 1967 and we left the shop before it's impending demolition in May 1974.

  3. Before I retired I worked in a small convenience shop which belonged to a large chain (McColls) so thought would give a view from the other side although I too would have had a “go” at the above mentioned employees so am not defending their disgraceful behaviour. As I said the shop was a small convenience store and there was usually just 2 members of staff on shift most of the while, our customers were mostly regulars who we got to know we’ll, being on first name terms of many of them. I would say that 95% of the customers were great (they would moan about the prices but McColls isn’t th

  5. Well had a brill holiday cruising around Germany's River's The staff on the boat were mostly from "Romania" and could not do enough for you, At the start of our holiday we caught the train to Folkestone getting up at 5 00am we arrived at the Holliday Inn which as Saga had said the coach leaves from their for the tunnel, so to save rushing we had booked a room. Arrived about 11 30 and had on the train a cup of dishwater sorry cup of tea, so at reception ask if any sandwich's were available Answer "If you go to the end of the road there is a Tesco they sell sandwich's WHAT!!!! 8. I was Warehouse manager here when it first opened. Parking was near impossible in the area sdo I used to cycle in each morning. Kept me nice and fit and with the added bonus of being able to go to the NTMC for several pints and a sing-song on Friday nights after working until 8pm. The bike ride home was usually an adventure after the evening in the pub

  10. I know we have seen hundreds of Pictures of Nottingham over the years, but I have just been browsing this site and there are a few of interest. There should be, I believe there are about 21,509 to view. If we have seen this link before, then I apologise, but if your memory is as good as mine, you will always be seeing it for the first time? I just pressed Show all and then See More as the notice came up. I only managed half an hour, so I have lots more to see.https://picturenottingham.co.uk/

  11. Actually carni, it has been mentioned before https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/17757-historical-photos-of-nottingham/? but it's worth highlighting again to point out what it actually is. In the old days there was Picture the Past, which had photos from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. A while ago - due to many reasons - PTP became only Derbyshire, while Picture Nottingham was created to include just the Nottingham photos. Unfortunately the Nottingham site is primarily interested in the money-making side of things, and they've stuck a massive watermark across the ph

  16. Continuing the theme ... Chase Farm is in now in the process of being demolished, so got in just in time. Now gated, CCTV'd etc., so no chance of getting in. Wandered down to Appleton Gardens to check out the old house that Cliff Ton mentioned. For all you terminally nostalgic folk out there (like me) took a few photos. Not quite as photogenic as the farm, but ... Looks like it was a very nice property in its day. All locked and bolted so no interiors I'm afraid. One of the residents of the flats told me that planning p

SG.........can sympathise with you ref' shoplifters in small stores,,,, i worked in a few McColls around Sheffield/Rotherham as a plain clothes Store Detective,, plus many of the Coops that are now McColls. It wasn't so much what they stole,,more the intimidation and threats they gave to these lady Staff members,,who often worked just two of em until 10 and 11 oclock at night,,i worked with em to this time and they were always glad to see us. I blame the Management for allowing this,,very seldom saw male staff at night and never any Managers, who always finishe

  24. I have always thought that the like or dislike of a name relies heavily upon who you have previously known with that appellation. What, in the intervening years, has become of Miranda, Celia, Delia, Hilary, Wendy, Priscilla and Prudence to name but a few of my favourite female names. The amusing comment from Staverton Girl concerning "Anne with the runny nose" reminds me of a Henry Mellish lad who never seemed to get the hang of blowing his nose, and who after putting away his handkerchief, would regularly have a "banjo string" attaching his nose to his ear. To this day I have disl

  26. So pleased you enjoyed it. A one off I think. Part of the reason the photo is a bit fuzzy could probably be the double glazed glass, which hasn't been cleaned inside or outside since the beginning of December! Can't get the cleaners you know. PS Can't take the credit, the photographer was Chris.

  29. There is a massive topic on this very site, "Pubs closing down" with an impressive one thousand three hundred & thirty three replies, can you imagine if this was posted there? Making one thousand three hundred & thirty four replies, the interest & memories it may jog? Anyone noticed all these NottmPost articles are written by Andy Smart, I think he should pay the bill for our site? Before it disappears, It's clearly where he gets all his info from.

Zombie apocalypse, night of the walking dead & The living Dead is the same for some of the Bulwell residents especially those with their fixed permanently gazing at their mobile phones like nothing else in this world matters.

  38. I took this is 2005 and it's surprising how much has changed in just over 10 years. The entrance to Vic Centre has been completely changed and remodelled; the road & traffic layout is different; on the left up Mansfield Road, York House has been demolished; and the photo was taken from Trinity Square car park which is no longer there.
