  1. There are times when I'm ashamed to be ENGLISH, such as when they refuse to eat "foreign muck", or when they complain that foreigners don't speak English, or much of the xenophobia we are seeing at the moment, but I've never been ashamed to be British. A couple of years ago, I took my elderly father-in-law to a Polish shop in Sneinton. As he was disabled, I parked in a marked disabled bay which was outside an adjacent house. When I was taking the shopping back to the car, I was accosted by the resident of the house and told in no uncertain terms to "f*** off back where I came from", and that

  3. Here is a link to a bit of information about the changes in and around Nottm during the course of most of our life times. We have probably all read most of this info at other times, but if you are like me, will never tire of reading about Nottingham, When you reach the bottom of the page you can go to Previous or Next. Lots of reminders both ways. Enjoy yer sens. http://www.nottsheritagegateway.org.uk/places/nottingham/nottinghamc20.htm

  4. I've only ever been to the US & when the locals knew I was a "Brit" I could not have been treated any better if I had been royalty. However in Nottm this morning I was ashamed to be a "Brit" when a thug about twenty years old threw his rucksack on the ground after a muslim lady accidentaly caught his arm with her bag. The lady was old enough to be his mum ! & he was threatening her aggressively, very brave indeed. He was most fortunate that I didn't let Mrs Catfan loose on to him,

  5. The article is total drivel and I wonder why it was posted? I have lived in France almost half time for the past 12 years and worked in mainland Europe extensively. I can assure you that we are well respected, especially by the Germans. Football hooligans and tasteless holiday makers do not represent the true nature or stature of a Nation. Unlike Mick I am always proud to be British.

  7. Managing to get out on the cycles every day just now. So long as it isn't raining when we leave the house, that is OK by us. Today as usual we got caught out by the weather, but it never worries us once we are out. The canals are coming to life now with all the Narrow Boats, Walkers, Cyclists, Joggers and not forgetting the Canoeists and the wonderful Wild Life which is such a pleasure to watch and appreciate. We missed the first lot of hatched birds this year due to decorating and then a couple of weeks holiday. Swans and five Signets, Geese and five Goslings, Coots and Ducks with their litt

  8. When I was in America an American said to me "the thing about England is it hasn't been a victim country since 1066. Most other European countries have been victims of invasion & occupation, & many of them bailed out by the Brits. In other parts of the world most countries have been colonised, either by Brits or some other European country, & a lot of countries have lost wars to Brits. Brits as a rule of thumb doesn't lose wars." Is this why some hate us? They're jealous of our past???

  9. As many of you know, my mrs and step son are Russian. The news companies from both UK and Russia are very heavily biased in their reporting. The neo-fascist firms attached to the football clubs, mainly Spartak and Lokomotiv Moscow have been known for years. There is a branch of the Russian police known as OMON. They are the hard guys and some of my family are in OMON. They describe many battles around the football stadia. So football violence is not a new thing. Nor are the gangs unknown. How do you stop them? Difficult but it is certain that the Russian gangs will not have a nice time whe

  10. If you'd seen the footage of the old dock area, our fans were provoked an attacked by Russian and French thugs. At the England v Russia game, our innocent fans were charged by the Russians. It was plainly obvious who the culprits were. I am thoroughly sick to the back teeth of people with a holier than thou attitude constantly blaming our fans.

  12. #19 Who says that Europeans hate us? I've certainly not seen anything like that in my life, nor has my daughter - who's got very good friends from many countries. She's in Spain this week, then Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, next week, then Germany in a few weeks time. All of it meeting up with the mates she made while on an EU-sponsored student exchange in Canada.

  15. It only took 22 years until they were at it again, which proves man learns nothing from history. Still haven't, but the next one might be the last. There are a few that say the one after WWIII will be with bows and arrows. Or should that be, with "like" bows and arrows, Jill?

  18. I can only report my own experience, which is that my HP printer dates from 2001 and was initially used with Windows ME (remember that??). Since then I have successively upgraded to using Windows Vista, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and recently Windows 10 and had no problem at all with the printer working. My Canon scanner dates from 2007 and has also worked successively with Windows 8, 8.1 and now 10 with no problems. Maybe just lucky!

  22. I have never been ashamed to be British. The mainstream media seem to like to twist and distort events for sensationalistic reasons so I stay away from it. Every nation on earth has its share of idiots, but I have always found acceptance wherever I have gone. Brits seem to be well liked here in the USA. My wife was told (jokingly). You only married him for his accent.

  24. Re #34 Yes, Windows XP was a superb OS - much to the chagrin of Microsoft who realised that most people didn't want to 'upgrade' from it to their next MS offering (Vista) because everything was working great and their new stuff was full of problems and offered nothing new. So they set about crippling XP to try and force people to move and get back to the 'churn' of: a new computer, new software, new peripherals, buy, buy, buy....... Re #27 'Trusted company' ? There is a saying in the IT world: 'Microsoft - talk like hippies, act like Sicilians' If you don't automatically buy their prod

  25. It was posted for discussion. Its doing the rounds on social media. I personally avoid holiday locations where drunken Brits (or any race) frequent. And yes we have a reputation for it, of which we are sometimes reminded.

  30. I'd be interested to read those letters. Both my grandfathers fought in the Great War and both were badly affected by it, as must have been the case with most who were involved. They rarely spoke about it other than to friends and neighbours who also served. We can think ourselves immensely lucky never to have witnessed the carnage they experienced.

  35. I am in the process of transcribing some letters that were written by my grandfather to my grandmother during the First World War. He would seem to have been well educated and I note that he hyphenates the words to-morrow and week-end. While I'm on I am going to publish transcripts of the letters via a Wordpress site as near to 100 years after they were written as is practical. The first I have is dated 16th June 1916. I'll put a link on here when it's done.

  36. If you are reasonably computer savvy, it is possible to remove the irritating popup that tries to get you to install Win 10. It is update KB3035583 and you can un-install it by going to: Control Panel Programs Programs and Features Installed Updates Just make sure that you don't re-install it the next time you do a Microsoft Update (i.e. review the updates before agreeing to install them). This whole thing makes a mockery of the idea that Automatic Updates are the best thing for your computer. What Microsoft 'recommends' might well be good for them, but not necessarily for you !
