  2. As a cyclists' in Nottingham over 50 years ago we would have a club run called the 'Holly Run'. It was always 2 sunday's before Christmas. So tomorrow would have been the day. Off we would go into the country looking for holly bushes; returning home with a bunch of holly tied to to our saddle bags. Don't suppose that it is done nowadays?

  3. To anyone from this area it's Goat-um. That's what I've always known it as and what I've always heard locally. But to anyone from outside Notts, they always say Goth-um, as if it's the place where Batman lives.

  4. Was always into 'science', so as a kid I made bombs, rockets, flares, kites, model aeroplanes and basic electronic stuff. Later I fooled myself that I liked car mech, but really it was simple enough stuff that I had to do because I couldn't afford to pay anybody else. Now I'm into gardening, hi-fi, music, fungi, walking and figuring out how to do 'life', while it's still an option. I was out with a mate yesterday.. from when we were DJ ing at the 360 Club 40 years ago. We love to say 'We did it and we still can'.. but we also have to accept that we're getting old. Not sure what the right

  5. Dear Mr Fog I'm writing to you to ask if you aren't tired. For more than 15 days with 7 more to come you have been haunting us. we are getting very depressed not being able to see our gate and trying to avoid the ditches on the road when we drive. Who's in charge of this atrocious weather? Are you in cahoots with Mr Jack Frost? Why don't you step aside for a while and let Mrs Sun show her beautiful face. We feel so much better when she shines , she makes us feel happy. I know that after the next 7 days Mrs Sun will be shining and keep us happy around Christmas but please Mr Fog have pity on u

  10. I have never heard of that PP, but it sounds great fun. I bet you all had a great laugh. We did our own version two weeks ago by car. All around the lanes in parts of Staffs and Shropshire. Loaded up with our long "Secateurs, stopping when we found a tree where the Holly with berries was reachable. Mostly, someone had got there before us. Trying very hard not to trespass, as neither of us can run very fast anymore.

  13. Public parks are an important resource for communities and visitors. It is many years since I visited the Arboretum and I am sorry to hear that it is not being well maintained. The posts here about keeping calm are spot on. Parks are places for relaxation and enjoyment to reduce stress levels and a good place for workers to take a lunch break. There are many people who do not have gardens and need these open spaces in cities. I recall young work colleagues talking about going home to their flats in the heat of the summer and they had nowhere to sit out. Investment in parks is money spent on co

  14. can anyone remember Camms Coaches? When I worked at Hoveringham transport to work was provided by these, the one I caught used to pick us up from near Canning Circus and go up Carlton Road, one of the wheels came off once and it was a miracle how they ever got up the hill. We used to get sent home early when it was foggy, a message came over the tannoy telling us to go for the coach as it would be leaving shortly due to low visibility.

  17. I like Fairytale of New York. It has a good memorable tune, parts of it are clever and funny but it also has the undertone of sadness to remind us of those who are on the margins of society for a variety of reasons. Not everyone has a good Christmas. I also love O Holy Night. Again good music and this one gives me goosebumps.

  28. Dear Mr Fog and Mr Jack Frost. Thankyou very much for the pathetic plea I made to you the other day. Mr Jack you must have put very hot water in your hot water bottle for now the temperature has gone from minus 6 to above almost reaching 10 of course Mrs Sun has something to do with it too, with shining she has made the sky a lovely blue. You of course Mr Fog had some thoughts for us poor mortals and I hope your cold has cleared for good. Its a pleasure to go for a walk or even to look outside. Thankyou once again.

  31. Had some good times in The Mechanics in the 60/70s. Mam and her five sisters were brought up on Vicarage St about five doors up from the pub. They all were good singers and would go to the sing-a-long pubs in and around Nottm and get up on the mike, some times "Harmonising". Mams speciality was by Gershwin, Summertime. She passed on the love of "The Blues" to all her children. Sadly, none of us inherited her wonderful voice! We used to come back to Notts in the 70s and my younger sisters would babysit, while we did a tour of the sing-a-long pubs. The uncles used to drive while Mam and the Aun

  38. I took my wife to the hospital today for a scan and to talk about her radiotherapy. They tattoo'd 3 dots on her upper body which are permanent. It's a marker for when she has her treatment and if she ever needs treatment in the future. If the scan is ok then she starts her radiotherapy at the end of December. When she booked in at the hospital she was given her special car park ticket which allows her free parking every time she goes for treatment.

  40. Sir Edward Watkin was a visionary and a 'mover and shaker' who exerted a major influence on rail travel in the Victorian age. Whilst he may not have been an 'engineer' per se, he was a railway man through-and-through as evidenced by his achievements (the Metropolitan Railway, the Great Central, first attempt at the Channel Tunnel etc etc). So he definitely knew about 'railway engineering'. The dismantling of our railways and the Great Central in particular was incredibly short sighted and done with indecent haste. It's true that there was a lot of 'duplication' of routes - indeed Bulwell h

  41. Great info. As I currently live very close to that area, I pass the old Station Masters house on St Albans Rd frequently. I cringe at what we could have today if all this was still present, and had been better utilised. As usual due to old rivalries, petty jealousies and a complete lack of forward thinking, the BEST railway ever constructed in this country was desecrated after barely sixty years of existence. Forget Brunel and the GWR. This was instigated by Sir Edward Watkin, the most enlightened and positive railway engineer ever.

  45. Hi, first record bought was the Weavers - dated 1960 (just looked), second was Peter, Paul and Mary - dated 1962. All time favourites the Watersons - mid sixties. The Watersons were a folk group from 'ull. Memorable songs - the north country maid, Holmfirth anthem, I am a rover and the white cockade. Coal Dust Ballads by the Ian Campbell Folk (same era) has lots of pre-war pit songs and music. Whilst an EFDSS (English folk dance and song society) record includes a Jack Armstrong who started performing in pubs in 1926. Once heard Ewan McColl singing in the backroom of a pub in Nottingham,
